Business Books

Teams divide different chapters or summaries of a business text, read their assigned section silently, and brief one another to extract useful concepts for their work.

45 minutes | 4 to 24 people

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Survey and cross-pollinate core concepts from a business text across a working group in a compressed session.

Use it when: Use when a team needs quick input from an industry book, research report, or methodology guide before an ideation or planning session.

Skip it when: Skip when the source material requires dense sequential comprehension, detailed mathematical review, or hands-on practice before discussion.

Group arrangement: Small reading teams of 3 to 5 people; maximum 5 parallel teams.

Timing: Source indicates 30 to 60 minutes; UWT standardizes on 45 minutes to allow 15 minutes of silent reading and structured team synthesis.

Materials and tools

Before participants arrive

  1. Select a relevant book or comprehensive report and pre-divide it into 3 to 5 distinct chapters or self-contained sections.
  2. Place physical chapter excerpts or summaries at small-group tables before participants arrive.

Say this to open

We will review a full book together in 45 minutes by dividing the chapters. Each person reads one section silently, takes brief notes on what stands out or what to challenge, and then shares key findings with your table. Let's assign chapters and begin reading.

How to run it

  1. Assign reading sections 5 minutes

Form teams of 3 to 5 participants. Distribute one different chapter or summary section to each team member. Have each person verify which section they hold.

  2. Silent individual reading 15 minutes

Participants read their assigned section silently. On scratch paper, each person jots down: 1) One core premise, 2) One claim they agree or disagree with, and 3) One practical pattern or application. Reading stops when the 15-minute timer sounds.

  3. Table briefings 15 minutes

Within each table, members take timed 2-minute turns presenting their section's main idea and practical takeaways to their teammates. Teammates note patterns or contradictions across chapters.

  4. Whole-room application debrief 10 minutes

Facilitator brings the full room together. Hear one key finding or practical takeaway from up to 4 tables, focusing on how the material connects to current work.

Debrief questions

Finished output: A shared table list of key findings, agreed concepts, and disputed ideas derived from the full book.

Remote

Send digital chapter PDFs or text summaries in advance. Assign small groups to breakout rooms of 3 to 5 people. Run the 15-minute silent reading in the main room or breakouts with cameras off, then cue group briefings in breakouts. Capture takeaways in a shared digital document.

Hybrid

Collocated participants form in-person tables, while remote members form fully virtual breakout pods. Ensure all participants receive identical digital copies of the texts. Rejoin in a unified video conference for the 10-minute whole-room debrief.

Access and participation choices

If the session gets stuck

A participant finishes their reading section in 5 minutes and becomes disengaged.
Prompt fast readers to review their notes, formulate two specific debate questions for their teammates, or review the introduction of the text.
A participant struggles to finish reading dense text within 15 minutes.
Advise skimming headings, chapter summaries, and conclusion paragraphs so they can still capture the broad theme.

Observed in Relationship Makers Handbook (pages 89-91) under the title Business Books.

The original source outlines collaborative book extraction using 5-person teams, silent chapter reading, and discussing patterns or arguments. UWT set a clear 45-minute structure, explicit step timing, structured individual note-taking prompts, and defined group reporting rules.
