United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet
Broken Telephone
Participants pass a whisper sequentially along a single line without repetitions. The final person speaks the received phrase aloud and compares it to the written original.
15 minutes | 4 to 24 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Demonstrate directly how verbal information degrades and alters across sequential human handoffs.
Use it when: Use at the start of a communication or handoff workshop to establish why direct confirmation matters.
Skip it when: Skip when team members have hearing impairments or when physical whispering causes discomfort.
Group arrangement: Single line or circle of 4 to 12 people; split groups larger than 12 into two parallel lines
Timing: Matches the 15-minute lower bound from the source
Materials and tools
- Prepared starter phrase cards (or index cards with phrases written in advance)
- Whiteboard or flip chart
- Markers
- Scratch paper
Before participants arrive
- Have one starter phrase card ready for each active line.
- Arrange seating or standing spots in a single line or circle spaced about an arm length apart.
Say this to open
We are going to pass a spoken message down the line. I will whisper a specific sentence to the first person once. You may whisper what you heard to the person next to you exactly once. No repeats, no clarifying questions, and no shouting. The last person will say what they heard out loud.
How to run it
Form lines and set ground rules 2 minutes
Place participants in a line or circle. For 13 to 24 participants, create two parallel lines as balanced in size as possible. If the total is odd, let one line have one extra person or invite an odd participant to serve as timekeeper and recorder. Read the opening script. Emphasize that each whisper can happen only once.
Transmit the message 5 minutes
Hand the prepared card to person 1 in each line. Person 1 reads it silently, puts the card away, and whispers the phrase once into person 2's ear. Person 2 immediately whispers what they heard to person 3. Continue sequentially to the end of the line. Observers and waiting participants stay silent.
Reveal and compare 3 minutes
Ask the final person in each line to announce what they heard. Then ask person 1 to read the original card aloud. Write both phrases side by side on the whiteboard or flip chart using markers.
Debrief handoff friction 5 minutes
Lead a brief reflection with the whole room using the debrief questions. Take 3 to 4 quick observations from participants.
Debrief questions
- Where in the chain did the message alter most, and what caused the shift?
- What instinctive tactics did you use when you could not hear clearly?
- What safeguards in daily team communication replace unverified sequential whispers?
Finished output: A public side-by-side comparison of the original message and the final heard message.
Remote
Assign a strict numeric sequence in chat. The facilitator sends a private direct message containing the phrase to participant 1. Participant 1 sends a private direct message to participant 2, who copies or retypes it once to participant 3. The final person pastes their received text into the public chat before the facilitator pastes the original.
Hybrid
Seat in-person participants in one sequence and place remote participants together at one end of the chain, or run two separate parallel lines (one in-room via whisper, one remote via sequential private direct messages) and compare results simultaneously.
Access and participation choices
- Participants who prefer not to whisper or be whispered to can act as the official recorder or timekeeper.
- Participants with hearing difficulties can play the visual variation: sketch the concept on scratch paper and pass the sketch face down for the next person to redraw.
If the session gets stuck
- A participant asks their neighbor to repeat the phrase.
- Remind the room gently that the rule forbids second tries. Instruct them to pass along whatever fragment or guess they heard.
- The whisper is loud enough for everyone to hear.
- Ask participants to lean closer and use soft vocal cord whispers, or turn back-to-back until it is their turn.
Terms used here
- Sequential handoff: Passing information person to person in a chain without checking back with the originator.

Sources and adaptation
Observed in Participatory Methods library under Broken Telephone (known traditionally as Telephone or Chinese Whispers). Original creator unknown.
Retains the traditional whisper game procedure and phrase themes documented by Participatory Methods. UWT added explicit parallel line handling for up to 24 participants, exact time increments summing to 15 minutes, whiteboard display logistics, visual drawing alternatives for accessibility, and a structured remote direct-message protocol.
