Birthday Round Up

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Arrange a group in calendar sequence using nonverbal communication and introduce participant names through movement cues.

Use it when: Use as an active icebreaker for groups of up to 16 people to build focus and learn names without preliminary small talk.

Skip it when: Skip when participants prefer not to share calendar dates, when clear floor space is unavailable, or when charades-style movement causes discomfort.

Group arrangement: Whole group standing in an open room

Timing: 16 minutes allocated by UWT: 1 minute briefing, 4 minutes silent sorting, 8 minutes for up to 16 introductions at 30 seconds each, and 3 minutes debrief.

Materials and tools

• Timer or stopwatch
• Open floor space free of tripping hazards
• Shared virtual whiteboard with pre-populated name cards (remote/hybrid only)

Before participants arrive

1. Move chairs and tables against walls to ensure sufficient clear space for the group to stand in a wide circle.
2. For remote or hybrid sessions, pre-populate a digital whiteboard with one movable card per participant name.

Say this to open

Without speaking, mouthing words, or writing anything down, line up in order of your birthdays, from January 1st at my left to December 31st at my right. Use hand signals or body language to indicate your month and day. When you believe your line is correct, join the two ends together to form a closed circle.

How to run it

1. Explain rules 1 minutes

   Speak the opening script. Clarify that only month and day matter, not birth year. Emphasize that all participants must remain completely silent once sorting starts.

2. Line up silently 4 minutes

   Start the timer. Participants use finger counts and nonverbal gestures to organize into chronological order. Stop when the ends meet to form a closed circle.

3. Verify and perform 8 minutes

   Start with January. Each person states their name and date, then silently mimes an action starting with their first initial. The facilitator times 30 seconds for each guessing round while the room calls out guesses. Out-of-order members quietly shift into place without penalty.

4. Debrief coordination 3 minutes

   Invite everyone to sit. Ask two debrief questions about communication challenges and nonverbal signals. Hear brief observations from three volunteers.

Debrief questions

• What specific hand signals or cues worked best to separate the month from the day?
• How did you resolve uncertainty when two birthdays fell close together without speaking?

Finished output: A group arranged in verified calendar order, with names and optional movement cues shared.

Remote

All participants remain muted on video with cameras on. Open a shared virtual whiteboard containing pre-populated cards with each person's name. In silence, participants drag their cards into left-to-right calendar order across the canvas, using webcam hand gestures or cursor wiggles to negotiate placement. Once the line is set, each participant unmutes in order, announces their date, and performs their alliterative mime on camera.

Hybrid

Hybrid delivery splits the physical mechanic and cannot provide an identical experience. To run together fairly, the entire silent sort must happen on a shared visual whiteboard projected in the room. In-person and remote participants remain silent and use mobile devices or laptops to drag their pre-labeled name cards into order on the canvas, watching each other's webcams or physical gestures. Once set, the group verifies dates sequentially: in-room members speak and mime to the camera, while remote members unmute and mime on screen.

Access and participation choices

• Participants may use any memorable calendar date or arbitrary day instead of a real birthday without explanation.
• Participants may opt out of performing the alliterative mime and simply state their name and calendar date.
• Participants may pass entirely on entering the lineup and observe or assist the facilitator with timing.

If the session gets stuck

Participants whisper, talk, or mouth words during the silent alignment.

Raise a hand to pause the clock. Remind the room that mouths must stay closed and that communication must rely strictly on finger signals.

A participant freezes and cannot think of an alliterative action when their turn comes.

Pause briefly and invite the room to shout out friendly action ideas matching that participant's first initial.
