United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet
Balloonarama
Participants progress through eight movement exercises with balloons, advancing from solo handling to small-team passing and whole-group coordination. The session concludes with a structured debrief on communication and group spacing.
22 minutes | 4 to 20 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Coordinate gentle physical movement and communication across expanding group configurations.
Use it when: Use when an in-person group has open floor space and wants a light physical coordination exercise.
Skip it when: Skip when participants prefer to avoid sudden popping sounds, when latex allergies cannot be managed, or when open space is unavailable.
Group arrangement: Individual play, then balanced small teams of 3 to 5 people, concluding in one whole-room group.
Timing: UWT 22-minute facilitation plan based on an eight-game progression.
Materials and tools
- Air-filled latex-free balloons (1 per person plus 10 spares, inflated prior to session)
- Hand balloon pump (1 to 2 for inflation setup)
- Light juggle scarves (1 per person, used group-wide if balloons are unsuitable)
- Storage bin or basket to park unused balloons
- Timer or stopwatch
- Trash container for broken pieces
- Printed rule reference cards (1 per small group)
Before participants arrive
- Clear floor space of furniture, sharp edges, and tripping hazards.
- Inflate latex-free balloons with the hand pump; do not use helium or mouth inflation.
- Place parking bins and spare balloons near the facilitator station.
Say this to open
We are going to run an eight-game progression using balloons. We start with three gentle solo drills, move into small teams of three to five, and finish with two whole-group challenges. You can participate standing or seated. If you prefer not to tap balloons, you can serve as a spotter, timer, or counter. Keep touches gentle, avoid running or chasing, and stay within arm's reach.
How to run it
Introduce safety rules and roles 2 minutes
Distribute one inflated balloon to each willing handler. Explain the boundary rules: keep balloons below head height, do not dive or run, and pause immediately if a balloon pops so debris can be binned. Assign non-handling roles such as timekeeper or ground counter to anyone choosing them.
Game 1: Solo Tap and Catch 2 minutes
Each participant gently taps their balloon upward below head height and catches it. Participants count their own successful catches. If the balloon drops or drifts away, catch it calmly, reset, and start counting again from one. Maintain personal space.
Game 2: Solo Alternating Hands 2 minutes
Invite participants to tap their balloon alternately with the left hand and right hand at a comfortable height. Catching the balloon to pause or reset is allowed at any moment. Participants set their own small target for consecutive alternating touches.
Game 3: Solo Tap, Clap, Catch 2 minutes
Participants gently tap the balloon upward once, perform one comfortable clap, and catch the balloon. Anyone who prefers not to clap can nod or speak a chosen word before catching. Remind everyone to keep taps controlled and within easy reach.
Game 4: Team Name Pass 2 minutes
Form balanced teams of 3 to 5 participants. For 4 or 5 people, form one group. For larger groups, divide into ceiling(N/5) equal teams. Each team takes one balloon and parks extra balloons in the bin. Participants pass the balloon across their small circle by making eye contact, calling the receiver's name, and tapping gently for a catch.
Game 5: Team Air Chain 2 minutes
Using the same small circles and one balloon, teams attempt to keep the balloon airborne without catching. Consecutive touches by the same person are not permitted. Teams count consecutive passes. If a catch occurs or the balloon touches the floor, start a new chain.
Game 6: Team Two-Balloon Flow 2 minutes
Add a second balloon to each small team circle. Teams work to keep both balloons moving gently for ten continuous seconds without chasing or diving. Catching to reset is permitted. Teams briefly discuss who monitors which zone.
Game 7: Whole-Group Cloud 2 minutes
Bring the entire room into one open circle. Distribute one balloon per active handler and park any extras. On signal, everyone taps their balloon into the air and keeps balloons afloat in their zone for 20 seconds. Non-handling counters track how many remain airborne when time is called.
Game 8: Whole-Group Plan and Retry 2 minutes
Ask the group to agree on a realistic target count of balloons to keep aloft for 20 seconds. Allow 30 seconds for the group to plan positioning and coverage. Run the 20-second trial. If time remains, reset calmly and run a second attempt.
Debrief group coordination 4 minutes
Collect all balloons into storage bins. Convene the group seated or standing. Invite three or four brief reflections on how coordination, spacing, and verbal cues changed as group size increased.
Debrief questions
- What coordination adjustment helped most when shifting from small teams to the whole room?
- How did calling names or claiming zones change your team's success in managing multiple balloons?
- What strategies helped keep the activity calm and controlled rather than frantic?
Finished output: Completion of eight movement rounds followed by a whole-group reflection on coordination and communication.
Remote
This physical balloon sequence cannot be run with shared physical mechanics in a remote room. Instead, run a labeled alternative: Remote Gesture Echo. Participants stand or sit on camera. One person initiates a slow, continuous arm movement; the next person mirrors and transitions into a new movement across a designated speaking order for two minutes.
Hybrid
Hybrid delivery is not recommended because remote members cannot share physical airspace. If required, have in-person participants perform the balloon sequence while remote participants form their own breakout group running the Remote Gesture Echo alternative.
Access and participation choices
- Participants may participate while seated or standing.
- Participants can choose a non-tapping role as timekeeper, counter, or observer without explanation.
- Light juggle scarves may replace balloons group-wide to eliminate sudden pops and slow movement speed.
If the session gets stuck
- A balloon pops during play.
- Pause the round immediately. Clear fragments into the waste container. Check on participants and hand a spare pre-inflated balloon to the handler before resuming.
- Participants crowd into one space or chase descending balloons.
- Pause play and remind the room that chasing is disallowed; if a balloon drifts out of arm's reach, let it touch down and reset calmly.
Terms used here
- Parked balloons: Balloons placed in a bin or set aside when an exercise uses fewer balloons than participants.
- Air Chain: A sequence of consecutive passes between different players without catching or floor touches.
Balloonarama Eight-Game Rule Summary
Sources and adaptation
Observed in Playmeo library entries; attributed by Playmeo to Mark Collard. The specific eight-game sequence used here was designed by United We Transform.
Retained the three-tier progression (individual play to small teams of 3 to 5 to large-group challenges) from Playmeo evidence. Because the source's eight specific games were locked behind a paywall, UWT designed and supplied this explicit eight-game sequence, role options, scarf alternative, and 22-minute timing structure.
