Jump Tag
Participants stand in a circle, jump outward, and take sequential turns making a single standing broad jump to tag nearby players while others jump simultaneously to evade. Tagged players step out until one player remains.
12 minutes | 4 to 16 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Engage in quick physical movement, spatial judgment, and turn-based evasive action in a compact play space.
Use it when: Use during in-person active breaks, warm-ups, or physical education sessions when the group has open floor space and wants a quick physical energizer.
Skip it when: Skip when participants have mobility restrictions or joint injuries, when the flooring is slippery or crowded with furniture, or in quiet corporate settings where high-impact physical games are inappropriate.
Group arrangement: Single circle for 4 to 12 players; split into independent parallel circles of 6 to 8 players if total group exceeds 12.
Timing: 12 minutes suggested by UWT to accommodate setup, two full 4-minute active rounds, and a debrief
Materials and tools
- Open flat floor area free of tripping hazards
Before participants arrive
- Clear a wide floor area (minimum 6 by 6 meters) of chairs, bags, and obstacles.
- Confirm everyone is wearing flat, non-slip footwear.
Say this to open
We are going to play Jump Tag. We will form a circle and count off numbered positions. On my call of '3, 2, 1, JUMP', everyone will jump backward out of the circle once. Then, player one takes one standing broad jump toward another player to tag them gently on the arm. At that exact same second, everyone else jumps once in any direction to evade. Freeze where your feet land. If tagged, you step outside the circle to judge. The turn then passes to the next remaining player in sequence.
How to run it
Form circles and jump outward 2 minutes
Gather participants into a loose circle. If the group has more than 12 participants, divide them into two independent circles of 6 to 8 players. Have each circle count off sequentially from 1 up to their group size. Call out '3, 2, 1, JUMP!' On 'JUMP', every player makes one standing jump directly backward away from the center. All players freeze in place where they land.
Run sequential jumping round 4 minutes
Player 1 starts with one standing broad jump to tag someone with a gentle touch while airborne or upon landing. Simultaneously, all other players jump once in any direction to evade. Everyone freezes where they land. If tagged, that person steps out. The turn passes to the next active player in sequential order, skipping any player who was eliminated. Continue until one or two players remain.
Reset and run second round 4 minutes
Reassemble all eliminated and surviving players into the circle. Renumber players or reverse the numerical order to give different participants early turns. Call '3, 2, 1, JUMP!' to restart, then play a second full round until one or two winners remain.
Debrief strategies 2 minutes
Gather the whole room. Ask two or three participants to share how they decided where to jump when evading, or how they balanced reach against landing balance.
Debrief questions
- What balance did you find between jumping far to tag someone versus landing in a steady, balanced position?
- How did jumping at the exact same time as the tagger affect where you chose to move?
- For those who survived the longest, what strategy helped you evade tags without cornering yourself?
Finished output: Two completed rounds of turn-based jumping tag resulting in a final surviving player or pair per circle.
Remote
Jump Tag requires physical proximity and cannot be run online. A related remote visual reflex alternative is 'Grid Tag' using webcams: players point to the edge of their camera frame on a count of three; if two adjacent people point directly at each other on the screen grid, both switch off their cameras until one screen remains.
Hybrid
Not suitable for hybrid play. Remote participants cannot share the physical space or jump safely relative to local players. Remote participants can join as live audio-video turn-callers or tag referees, or play the separate camera-based reflex alternative 'Grid Tag' in an online breakout.
Access and participation choices
- Participants who prefer low-impact movement may take one long step instead of a jump, or take on an official referee role tracking eliminations.
- Anyone can decline physical play without explanation and serve as turn-caller, boundary monitor, or referee.
If the session gets stuck
- Players take extra shuffle steps after landing to reach a tag or escape.
- Enforce a strict freeze rule: the tag must happen mid-air or instantly upon feet hitting the ground. Any subsequent steps or leans do not count.
- Multiple players jump into each other while evading.
- Remind the group that evasive jumps should aim for open space away from others, and tagging must be a gentle touch on the shoulder or upper arm.
Terms used here
- Standing broad jump: A two-footed jump launched from a stationary position without a running start.
Sources and adaptation
Observed in Playmeo collection, which attributes Jump Tag to Mark Collard.
Retained the sequential jumping tag mechanic, simultaneous evasion jump rule, and elimination structure from Playmeo. UWT extended the overall run time to 12 minutes to accommodate setup, two full rounds, and a brief debrief. UWT also added explicit instructions for dividing large groups into circles of 6 to 8, clarified turn progression past eliminated players, and defined low-impact and referee options.
