United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet

Mirror Stretch

Pairs stand face-to-face and take turns leading and copying slow physical stretches in silence. After both partners lead, they switch to a new partner for another round.

5 minutes | 4 to 24 people

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Practice non-verbal attention and physical coordination by matching another person's movements in real time.

Use it when: Use as a short physical reset between sedentary agenda items or to start a collaborative session.

Skip it when: Skip when the group has unaddressed mobility constraints, severe spatial limits, or when participants need cognitive focus rather than physical movement.

Group arrangement: Pairs; if an odd number is present, one trio forms or one participant acts as timekeeper.

Timing: Playmeo sources list 1 to 2 minutes; expanded to 5 minutes to allow setup, two partner rotations, and a brief debrief.

Materials and tools

Before participants arrive

  1. Clear an open floor space where pairs can stand roughly 1 metre (3 feet) apart without colliding.

Say this to open

Find a partner and stand facing each other about three feet apart. Decide who will be Person A and who will be Person B. In each turn, the leader performs slow stretching movements without speaking. The partner acts as a reflection, mirroring those movements as closely as possible. Keep movements controlled so your partner can follow safely.

How to run it

  1. Form pairs and set roles 1 minutes

Participants pair up and stand facing each other about 1 metre apart. If there is an odd person, form one group of three or assign one volunteer to assist with timekeeping. Facilitator delivers the opening instructions.

  2. Round 1: Initial mirror and swap 1 minutes

Person A leads movements for 30 seconds while Person B mirrors. The facilitator calls time. Roles swap immediately: Person B leads for 30 seconds while Person A mirrors.

  3. Round 2: Switch partners and repeat 2 minutes

Participants find a new partner and step into position. Person A in the new pair leads for 30 seconds while Person B mirrors. Facilitator calls the swap, and Person B leads for 30 seconds.

  4. Debrief and close 1 minutes

Facilitator reconvenes the whole room and takes two quick observations based on the debrief questions.

Debrief questions

Finished output: Completion of two rounds of physical mirroring across two different partners.

Remote

Run in the main room or in breakout rooms of two. Both participants turn on cameras, step back so upper bodies are visible, and face their screens. Speaker view or pinning the partner ensures full visibility. Facilitator broadcasts time calls via audio or chat.

Hybrid

In-person participants pair with in-person participants. Remote participants pair with other remote participants via individual video feeds. If an odd remote participant remains, pair them with an in-person participant using a laptop placed at eye level.

Access and participation choices

If the session gets stuck

Participants move too quickly or make erratic motions that cannot be copied.
Remind the room that the goal is precise reflection, not tricking the partner. Encourage smooth, continuous motions.
An odd number of participants prevents even pairing.
Create one group of three where one leader directs two mirrors simultaneously, or invite one person to partner with the facilitator.

Sources and adaptation

Observed on Playmeo, credited to Mark Collard. The mirroring exercise is a traditional theater and movement warm-up.

Retained the core Playmeo dynamic of paired stretching, mirroring, 30-second role switches, and partner rotation. Standardized group sizing, added an exact 5-minute schedule, specific access adaptations, and debrief prompts.
