United We Transform | Facilitator run sheet
Riddle Relay
Pairs or trios work through a curated set of lateral-thinking riddles under a time limit, recording their guesses before checking them against the answer key. The group compares reasoning strategies across wordplay, logic, and literal interpretations.
15 minutes | 4 to 24 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Practice testing assumptions and alternate interpretations on ambiguous statements in small groups.
Use it when: Use as a low-stakes warm-up before problem-solving sessions or when re-engaging a group after a break.
Skip it when: Skip when participants need serious task alignment or when people feel anxious about competitive trivia and intelligence tests.
Group arrangement: Pairs or trios
Timing: UWT structured 15-minute facilitation plan based on the 5 to 15 minute band in source metadata.
Materials and tools
- One printed riddle sheet per pair or trio
- One pen or pencil per pair or trio
- One digital slide or handout with solutions for the reveal
- Digital timer or phone clock
- For mixed-location teams: a video meeting, digital participant question sheet, and an individual device and headset for each mixed-team member
Before participants arrive
- Print only the Riddle Relay Participant Sheet for each small group of 2 or 3 people. Keep the Facilitator Answer Key separate and reveal it only after the solving timer ends.
- Arrange seating so small teams can whisper their ideas without shouting across tables.
Say this to open
Today we have a quick riddle sprint. In small teams, you will tackle six classic lateral-thinking riddles. Some hinge on wordplay, some on double meanings, and some on everyday objects. Work together to test assumptions. Write down your team's consensus answer for each one before time expires. If your team gets stuck on one, skip it and come back. You have six minutes.
How to run it
Form teams and distribute riddles 2 minutes
Divide the room into pairs or trios. Hand one riddle sheet and one pen to each team. Instruct groups to read through all six riddles quickly before committing to answers.
Solve riddles in small groups 6 minutes
Start the 6-minute timer. Teams discuss each clue and record their best guess on the sheet. Give a verbal warning at the 3-minute and 1-minute marks. If a team finishes early, ask them to check their logic or write an alternate valid answer.
Reveal answers and score 4 minutes
Call time. Read each riddle aloud and invite one group to offer their answer before revealing the verified solution. Award one point per matching or logically valid answer. For example, for 'What has a head and a tail but no body?', accept 'a coin'.
Reflect on assumption shifts 3 minutes
Lead a brief reflection with the whole room. Ask two teams to share where an initial assumption sent them down the wrong path and what shifted their perspective.
Debrief questions
- Which riddle caused the strongest initial disagreement within your group, and why?
- What mental assumption did your group have to break to find the correct answer?
- How did bouncing multiple interpretations off a partner help you discard weak guesses faster?
Finished output: Completed riddle answer sheets with team scores and notes on alternative solutions.
Remote
Create breakout rooms with 2 or 3 participants each. Paste the six riddles into a collaborative document or the meeting chat. Allow six minutes in breakout rooms for teams to type their answers into private sections or direct message their completed list to the facilitator. Return to the main room, paste answers on a shared slide, and invite volunteers to explain tricky solutions.
Hybrid
Allocate everyone into pairs or trios across locations. Keep teams in one location where counts fit; otherwise form a mixed team. Each mixed-team member joins the video meeting on an individual device with a headset, with room participants spaced apart to avoid feedback. Give each team only the participant question sheet before solving. One member records the team answers in their own copy and submits them to the facilitator when time is called, before the answer reveal.
Access and participation choices
- Provide written riddle text visibly on slides or paper so participants do not have to rely only on spoken clues.
- Participants who prefer not to guess aloud may act as the team scribe, track time, or pass completely during whole-room sharing without penalty.
If the session gets stuck
- A participant already knows all the riddles from memory and shouts out the answers immediately.
- Ask anyone who recognizes a riddle instantly to let their partner propose an explanation first, or challenge them to come up with a second, plausible alternate answer.
- A team gets completely stuck on one puzzle and becomes frustrated.
- Remind the room that lateral riddles often hinge on puns or literal word mechanics, such as calendar spelling rather than weather. Offer a small hint about the category of the clue.
Terms used here
- Lateral thinking: Solving problems through an indirect and creative approach, often by abandoning standard step-by-step logic.

Sources and adaptation
Observed in Icebreaker-Games.org as 'Top 83 Riddles with Answers' (slug: 83-tricky-riddles-with-answers-to-challenge-your-brain-year). The underlying riddles are traditional folk riddles and brain teasers in the public domain.
The source provides an unorganized list of 83 riddles without facilitation structure. UWT adapted this by selecting six distinct riddles from the source text (sound, geography, orthography, wordplay, objects, physical movement) and structuring them into a timed, collaborative small-group exercise with clear team roles, scoring, and reflection. UWT separated the facilitator answer key from the participant sheet and added mixed-location pairs or trios using the same solving and reveal sequence.
