5-3-1 Summarizing Technique

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Consolidate prior knowledge or review shared content by progressively filtering individual ideas into a single collective priority.

Use it when: Use when reviewing a shared reading, video clip, or presentation topic with many valid perspectives.

Skip it when: Skip when the inquiry requires statistical data analysis or when a problem has only one correct technical answer.

Group arrangement: Individual work, then pairs, then quads (pairs combine). Odd counts form a single triad.

Timing: UWT suggested allocation based on typical 5 to 15 minute classroom runs.

Materials and tools

• One sheet of paper per person
• One writing pen or pencil per person
• Timer visible to the room
• Whiteboard and dry-erase markers for room recording

Before participants arrive

1. Write the central question or prompt on the room board.
2. Distribute one sheet of blank paper and a writing utensil to each participant.

Say this to open

Take three minutes on your own to write down five responses to the question on the board. Work quietly and get five distinct points on your paper.

How to run it

1. Brainstorm five individual ideas 3 minutes

   Participants write five distinct ideas, answers, or facts related to the posted prompt on their sheet. The facilitator tracks time and gives a 30-second warning.

2. Consolidate to three in pairs 4 minutes

   Participants turn to an adjacent partner. Partners share their lists and select the three strongest, clearest, or most important items across both lists, writing them down.

3. Select one top item in quads 4 minutes

   Each pair joins with another pair to form a group of four. The group compares their three-item lists and selects one final priority to represent their quad.

4. Share final priorities and debrief 4 minutes

   One spokesperson per quad reads their single chosen item while the facilitator writes it on the room board. The facilitator asks the brief debrief questions to close.

Debrief questions

• What criteria helped your team narrow your items down from three to one?
• Which discarded idea was hardest to let go?

Finished output: A shared board list showing one prioritized concept from each group of four.

Remote

Run individually in a shared online document or video meeting. In step 1, participants write five points on their own scratch pad. Move participants into two-person breakout rooms for step 2 to record three items in the shared doc. Merge two breakout rooms into four-person rooms for step 3 to choose one item. Return to the main room to review.

Hybrid

In-person pairs work together; remote participants work in video breakout pairs. For step 3, assign remote pairs together in breakouts and in-person pairs together in the physical room. Each quad types its single final output into a common online text document visible on screen in both settings.

Access and participation choices

• Participants can dictate their ideas to a partner instead of writing.
• A participant who chooses not to speak during group rounds may act as the group scribe or simply observe.

If the session gets stuck

Pairs cannot agree on which three items to keep.

Prompt them to merge two overlapping ideas into one sentence or cast a quick vote.

An odd number of participants leaves someone without a pair.

Create one group of three in step 2. That triad still selects three items, then joins another pair in step 3 as a five-person group.
