1-2-3-4

Pairs or trios rhythmically chant numbers and reveal fingers on one hand without talking, trying to hit an exact target sum as many times as possible in 60 seconds.

5 minutes | 4 to 24 people

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Practice non-verbal coordination and quick collective adjustment under a timed target constraint.

Use it when: Use as a rapid wake-up energizer between heavy agenda topics or to begin a session on implicit coordination.

Skip it when: Skip when participants have hand-mobility limits that make rapid finger flashing uncomfortable, or when the room needs quiet individual focus.

Group arrangement: Pairs (or trios if there is an odd count)

Timing: Based on the 60-second game round observed in Playmeo, with setup and a short group debrief.

Materials and tools

Before participants arrive

  1. Clear enough floor space so partners can stand or sit facing each other comfortably.

Say this to open

Find a partner and face each other. We are going to test non-verbal coordination. Together, you will pump your fist while chanting out loud: 'ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR.' Exactly on the word FOUR, each person shows zero to five fingers on one hand. Your pair's goal is to make the total number of fingers shown add up to exactly seven. You cannot speak or signal plans between counts. Let us run one slow practice round now.

How to run it

  1. Explain rules and test round 1 minutes

Explain the rhythm and rules. Pairs try one slow practice flash. Example: Player A shows 4 fingers and Player B shows 3 fingers; the sum is 7, which counts as a success. If Player A shows 5 and Player B shows 1, the sum is 6, which counts as zero. If there is a group of three, their target sum is eleven.

  2. Play the 60-second challenge 2 minutes

Start the 60-second timer. Partners chant 'ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR' repeatedly at their own pace. On every 'FOUR', both show their hand. If the sum is exactly 7 (or 11 for trios), they count one point and immediately start the chant again. No talking or verbal planning is allowed. Stop immediately when the timer sounds and note pair scores.

  3. Optional partner swap 1 minutes

Have participants switch partners quickly. Run a second 60-second round to see if new partnerships adapt faster or score higher.

  4. Brief reflection 1 minutes

Call the full room together. Take two quick participant observations on how they adapted without speaking.

Debrief questions

Finished output: Each pair achieves and reports a count of successful target sums completed in 60 seconds.

Remote

Run in main gallery view or two-person breakout rooms. Cameras must be on. Partners unmute, chant 'ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR' into their microphones, and thrust their hand clearly in front of the lens on FOUR.

Hybrid

Pair in-person participants with in-person partners. Pair remote participants together in breakout rooms. Keep timing synchronized across both environments using an on-screen timer.

Access and participation choices

If the session gets stuck

Players talk or try to signal numbers before chanting.
Remind everyone that total silence between counts is required; adjustments must happen purely through observation on the beat.
Odd number of total participants.
Form one group of three and set their target sum to exactly 11 fingers instead of 7.

Sources and adaptation

Observed on Playmeo under the title '1-2-3-4', where it is attributed to Mark Collard.

Preserved the core Playmeo mechanic of chanting 1-2-3-4, flashing fingers on four, no talking, and hitting target sums (7 for pairs, 11 for trios) within 60 seconds. UWT structured the 5-minute facilitation plan, added access alternatives for physical hand constraints, and framed a brief closing debrief.
