Partners conduct timed three-minute reciprocal interviews to discover unique facts about each other without repeating questions. Pairs then count and share their discoveries to highlight newly learned details.
15 minutes | 4 to 24 people
Choose this exercise
Purpose: Collect and record personal background facts between colleagues through structured, time-limited interview rounds.
Use it when: Use during team onboarding or early project kickoffs when members need an active, low-stakes way to converse one-on-one.
Skip it when: Skip when team members already know each other well or when the group needs to address high-stakes operational problems.
Group arrangement: Pairs working in parallel; if an odd number attends, form one triad of three interviewers taking turns
Timing: Based on the 3-minute-per-side interview structure observed in TeamBuilding.com sources, with 9 minutes added for setup, counting, and group sharing

Say this to open
Find a partner you do not know well. In this activity, you will interview each other to uncover as many unique personal facts as possible. Round one lasts three minutes: one person asks questions and writes notes, while the other answers. Round two also lasts three minutes, but the new interviewer cannot repeat any question asked in the first round. Ask professional or personal questions, but respect your partner if they choose to pass on a question.
How to run it
Form pairs and review rules 2 minutes
Assign or let participants choose partners. In an odd-sized group, create one group of three. Give each person paper and a pen. Remind the second interviewer that they must not repeat any question used in the first round.
Conduct round one interview 3 minutes
Start a three-minute timer. Partner A asks questions and notes down distinct facts learned about Partner B. Partner B answers. Stop immediately when the timer chimes.
Conduct round two interview 3 minutes
Start another three-minute timer. Switch roles immediately. Partner B now interviews Partner A and notes facts. Partner B must ask entirely different questions than Partner A asked.
Tally facts and identify unique details 3 minutes
Partners review their notes together. Each pair counts their total unique facts discovered across both rounds and selects one favorite fact or creative question to share with the wider room.
Share highlights and debrief 4 minutes
Invite four pairs to state their total fact count and share one surprising fact or unique question with the room. Close with a quick debrief on question styles.
Debrief questions
- Which questioning approach helped you gather specific facts the fastest?
- How did the rule banning repeated questions in round two change the types of questions Partner B had to ask?
Finished output: A pair-generated list of notes containing distinct facts about each participant, with total tallies recorded.
Remote
Place participants into two-person breakout rooms. Broadcast a central broadcast message at the 3-minute mark telling them to switch roles and remind Partner B not to reuse Partner A questions. Bring all participants back to the main room for the final 7 minutes to tally facts and report out in the chat.
Hybrid
Pair in-person participants together in the room and pair remote participants into dedicated video breakout rooms. Avoid pairing remote attendees with in-person attendees unless each individual has a dedicated laptop and headset. Collect fact totals via a shared online chat or whiteboard so both groups see the counts.
Access and participation choices
- Participants may pass on any question without explaining why, answering an alternate prompt instead.
- Participants with writing or motor difficulties can dictate facts into voice notes or have their partner confirm the facts verbally.
- Non-speaking participants can type questions and answers into a shared digital document.
If the session gets stuck
- Partner B struggles to invent completely new questions during round two.
- Provide the printed prompt card from the participant materials or allow Partner B to ask follow-up questions digging deeper into a topic Partner A barely touched upon.
- A pair includes an odd participant creating a group of three.
- Run three rounds of 2 minutes each instead of two rounds of 3 minutes, rotating roles so each person conducts one interview, answers once, and notes facts once.
Terms used here
- Unique Fact: A distinct piece of factual information that was previously unknown to the interviewer.

Sources and adaptation
Observed in TeamBuilding.com article '15 Top Small Group Games for Employees' by Grace He (published 2023, updated 2025).
The core mechanic of a pair interview with a 3-minute time limit per person, a rule prohibiting the second interviewer from repeating questions, and a tally of facts is taken directly from the Interview Game described in observation-0 and cached-public-eaefe6243213. UWT added explicit pacing, a 15-minute schedule, an accommodation plan, an odd-group handling method, and starter prompt materials.
