General Knowledge Trivia Round

Choose this exercise

Purpose: Provide a low-stakes competitive check-in that gets all participants speaking and consulting with peers within the first ten minutes.

Use it when: Use at the start of a meeting or after a long break to reset attention and prompt quick group collaboration.

Skip it when: Skip when the meeting requires immediate serious reflection, deep personal sharing, or when cultural differences in trivia topics could alienate participants.

Group arrangement: Teams of 2 to 4 participants (for 5 participants, form one pair and one trio)

Timing: UWT suggested 15-minute pacing based on the 10-question bank extracted from the source list.

Materials and tools

• One blank answer sheet and pen per team
• One facilitator master question and answer key
• Visual display or printed question slips for accessibility

Before participants arrive

1. Divide participants into teams of 2 to 4.
2. Place one blank answer sheet and pen on each team table.
3. Have the 10-question set ready to read aloud and display on a screen.

Say this to open

We will run a 10-question trivia warm-up in small teams. You have 30 seconds per question to confer quietly and write down your answer. At the end, we swap sheets, score them, and review the answers together.

How to run it

1. Form teams and explain rules 2 minutes

   Group participants into teams of 2 to 4. Ensure each team has an answer sheet and a designated scribe. Say the opening script. State the ground rule: no phones or internet searches.

2. Read the trivia questions 6 minutes

   Read each of the 10 selected questions aloud at 30-second intervals. Display the text on a slide or handout for visual access. Teams confer in whispers and write their answer on their sheet.

3. Swap sheets and review answers 5 minutes

   Instruct teams to trade answer sheets with a neighboring team. Read the correct answers one by one. Scorers mark correct responses with a check and award one point each.

4. Tally scores and debrief 2 minutes

   Collect final scores by a quick show of hands. Ask one debrief question to the full room, taking two quick volunteer responses before concluding.

Debrief questions

• How did your team decide on an answer when people disagreed?

Finished output: Completed and scored trivia sheets with an announced winning score.

Remote

Place teams into breakout rooms of 2 to 4. Provide each team with a link to an individual shared Google Doc, digital whiteboard frame, or direct one member to compile answers in chat. The facilitator broadcasts questions across rooms via broadcast messages at 30-second intervals. Bring all participants back to the main room after 6 minutes, display the answer slide, and direct teams to self-score their sheet.

Hybrid

Keep in-person attendees at physical tables writing on paper. Place remote participants in dedicated virtual breakout rooms using a shared digital document to record their answers. Display questions on the physical room screen and through video screen share simultaneously. During the answer reveal, in-person teams swap physical sheets while remote teams self-score on their document. Remote teams submit their final tally in the main video chat to join the in-person hand raise, and the facilitator alternates calling on in-person and remote speakers for the two debrief responses.

Access and participation choices

• Provide written questions visually on screen alongside verbal reading for hearing and comprehension access.
• Any participant may choose to observe, serve as the scribe, or decline answering without penalty.

If the session gets stuck

One team member dominates and writes answers without consulting peers.

Remind teams that every member must agree or verbally confirm before the answer is recorded.

Dispute over alternative answer phrasing or spelling.

Rule that phonetic spelling and reasonable equivalents count as correct; facilitator ruling is final.
