# Tutti Frutti

Pairs or individuals race against a one-minute timer to write words matching preset categories starting with a specific letter. Players compare answers to score points, awarding higher scores to unique words.

**Time:** 20 minutes. Participatory Methods suggests 20 to 30 minutes; structured here for three rounds in 20 minutes.
**People:** 4 to 24. Pairs or solo participants; whole room compares answers

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Recall vocabulary under specific constraints to warm up group interaction.
**Use it when:** Use as a fast-paced warm-up before a workshop session or to introduce relevant domain vocabulary.
**Skip it when:** Skip when participants are working across mixed language proficiencies where rapid spelling and vocabulary recall creates unequal pressure.

## Materials and tools

- One printed category grid sheet per participant or pair
- One pen or pencil per participant or pair
- One countdown timer visible to the room
- A set of pre-selected alphabet letters (excluding difficult letters like Q, X, Z)

## Before participants arrive

1. Print or copy the Tutti Frutti grid sheet for each pair or individual.
2. Select five common categories relevant to the session topic (for example: Tool, Action, Challenge, Resource, Role).
3. Write the chosen categories clearly on a shared board.

## Say this to open

We are playing Tutti Frutti. You will get five categories and one target letter. When the timer starts, write one word for each category that begins with that letter. You have sixty seconds. When time is called, pencils down. A valid word matches the category and the letter. If someone else wrote the exact same word, you earn five points. If nobody else wrote your word, you earn ten points.

## How to run it

### 1. Set up sheets and explain scoring (3 minutes)

Distribute grid sheets and pens. Form pairs or invite people to play solo. Read the opening script and demonstrate one neutral example: if the category is Workplace Skill and the letter is C, 'Communication' is valid, but if another team also wrote 'Communication', both get 5 points; a solo answer like 'Coaching' gets 10 points.

### 2. Run round one (4 minutes)

Announce the first letter (for example, 'S'). Start the sixty-second countdown timer. When the timer chimes, instruct all participants to set their pens down. Call out each category one by one. Have each group state their word. Award 10 points for unique valid entries, 5 points for matching valid entries, and 0 points for invalid or blank entries. Players tally their round score.

### 3. Run round two and three (8 minutes)

Repeat the process for round two with a new letter (for example, 'M'), allowing 60 seconds of writing followed by 3 minutes of score checking. Repeat for round three with a third letter (for example, 'P'). Players record their scores after each round.

### 4. Tally scores and debrief (5 minutes)

Have participants sum their total points across all three rounds. Acknowledge top scores without mandatory disclosure. Facilitate a brief debrief using two of the debrief questions, hearing from three to four volunteers.

## Debrief questions

- Which category was easiest to fill under time pressure, and which forced the most lateral thinking?
- How did playing in pairs compare to working individually to spot valid words?
- Which word shared today was the most unexpected match for its category?

**Finished output:** A completed three-round word grid with scored category entries for each participant or pair.

## Remote

Display the category grid on a shared digital slide. Participants write answers on their own scratch paper or in private text notes. When time ends, post words in the chat category by category to identify duplicate versus unique responses.

## Hybrid

In-person pairs and remote attendees use identical categories displayed on screen. When checking answers, alternate between in-person tables reading aloud and remote participants typing entries into the chat simultaneously.

## Access and participation choices

- Pairing allows participants who prefer not to write or spell quickly to partner with a volunteer scribe.
- Participants may keep their individual scores private or skip reading out answers during the scoring check.

## If the session gets stuck

**Participants argue over whether an unconventional word fits the category.**

Give the group five seconds to do a quick thumbs up or down vote; accept the majority decision immediately to maintain momentum.

**Some participants feel anxious about rapid spelling.**

Remind the room that phonetic approximations count as valid as long as the initial letter and intended meaning are clear.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in Participatory Methods library as a traditional parlor game adapted for participatory workshops.

Retained the traditional Tutti Frutti category-and-letter mechanic, timed rounds, and unique-versus-duplicate scoring model described in the Participatory Methods documentation. UWT structured the run sheet into three concrete rounds totaling 20 minutes, added explicit scoring values (10 points unique, 5 points duplicate), provided a printable five-category worksheet, and created hybrid/access guidelines.
