# Toe Touch Tag

Two teams slide beanbags across a midline to tag opponents on the shoes and send them to a holding zone. Teammates rescue captured players by sliding beanbags directly into the zone.

**Time:** 15 minutes. Playworks notes 10 minutes or more; 15 minutes allows for demonstration, two rounds, and a brief debrief.
**People:** 6 to 24. Two balanced teams split across a divided playing field.

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Practice cooperative strategy, spatial awareness, and target accuracy under moving conditions.
**Use it when:** Use during active workshops, team offsites, or youth sessions when an energetic, low-contact movement break is needed.
**Skip it when:** Skip if the room lacks open floor space, when floor surfaces cause high friction, or if participants cannot engage in low-impact standing and bending.

## Materials and tools

- 8 to 12 fabric beanbags
- 1 roll of painter tape or 6 floor cones for boundary markings

## Before participants arrive

1. Mark a clear rectangular court on a smooth floor using painter tape or cones.
2. Divide the court across the center with a tape midline.
3. Mark one small recovery zone box in the rear corner of each team's half.
4. Place half the beanbags along each side's baseline before starting.

## Say this to open

We are going to play Toe Touch Tag. The goal is to slide beanbags along the floor to tag the other team on their shoes while keeping your own feet safe. If a sliding beanbag touches your foot or shoe, walk over to the zone on the opponent's side. Your teammates can free you by sliding a beanbag straight into your zone. All throws must stay on the floor. Let us walk through a quick test slide.

## How to run it

### 1. Set boundaries and demonstrate slide (3 minutes)

Explain the boundary lines, the midline, and the corner rescue zones. Demonstrate a safe floor slide: release the beanbag along the ground with an underhand motion so it skims the surface. Clarify that airborne throws do not count and must be re-thrown.

### 2. Play Round 1 (5 minutes)

Divide participants into two equal squads, one on each side. Start the round. Players retrieve beanbags and slide them toward opponents' feet. If tagged on the foot, a player goes to the rescue zone behind the opposing team. A player in the zone is freed when a teammate slides a beanbag into the zone without crossing the center line. Stop play after 5 minutes.

### 3. Adjust tactics and play Round 2 (5 minutes)

Pause the action. Give each team 60 seconds to agree on one defense strategy and one rescue strategy. Reset beanbags and play a second 4-minute round under the same rules.

### 4. Debrief team coordination (2 minutes)

Gather players at the center line. Ask one or two debrief questions. Invite 2 to 3 voluntary observations before wrapping up.

## Debrief questions

- What coordination helped your team balance attacking feet and rescuing teammates in the zone?
- How did your team handle defending your own feet while aiming your slides?

**Finished output:** Two completed rounds of active gameplay with tactical team adjustments.

## Remote

This game relies on physical floor sliding and cannot run online in this form. As an active remote alternative, run a 10-minute game of 'Group Reaction Count', where participants take turns calling sequential numbers to 20 without talking over each other or using set order.

## Hybrid

Hybrid play is not viable for this physical floor game. Remote participants cannot share the court. Keep remote participants in a separate parallel video activity or run an all-digital game for everyone.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants who prefer not to run or bend can serve as zone coaches, line judges, or spotters who track beanbag arrivals.
- Any participant may step off the court to the sidelines at any time without giving a reason.
- If bending to slide is difficult, participants may roll the beanbag down an angled cardboard tube or toss lightly underhand below knee height.

## If the session gets stuck

**Players throw beanbags through the air instead of sliding them.**

Pause briefly, remind the room that only ground-skimming slides count, and mandate that bags leaving the ground return possession to the receiving team.

**One team gets trapped in the zone too quickly, ending the flow.**

Add a rule that any freed player gets a free walk back to their half with hands raised, during which they cannot be tagged.

## Terms used here

- Midline: The center line dividing the two teams' halves that players may not cross.
- Rescue zone: A designated box at the back of each court where tagged players wait until a teammate slides a beanbag into it.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in the Playworks Game Library under 'Toe Touch Tag'.

Retained the original Playworks rules of sliding beanbags at feet, going to an opposing-side zone when hit, and freeing teammates via zone slides. Added explicit field layout, structured round timing, roles for low-mobility participants, clear sliding constraints, and targeted debrief questions. Corrected an old database summary that mislabeled this game as a relationship-mapping exercise.
