# Match & Out

Players maintain a steady rhythm of thigh pats and claps before flashing one of three two-finger poses. Anyone whose gesture matches the leader's pose steps out until a new round begins.

**Time:** 5 minutes. Playmeo lists 2 to 5 minutes; this run sheet budgets 5 minutes for demonstration, practice, and multiple rapid rounds.
**People:** 4 to 24. Whole group arranged in a standing or seated circle facing inward.

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Focus group attention and refresh collective energy through shared rhythmic reaction.
**Use it when:** Use in person as a quick energizer when a meeting or workshop needs a physical reset and a shift in attention.
**Skip it when:** Skip when the group prefers entirely non-competitive exercises, or when people are working on tasks that require sustained analytical focus.

## Materials and tools

- No special materials.

## Before participants arrive

1. Arrange chairs or clear floor space so everyone can sit or stand in a single circle with a clear view of the leader.

## Say this to open

We are going to play a quick reaction game called Match and Out. We will keep a steady rhythm together: two thigh pats, two hand claps, two thigh pats, and then reveal a pose. You have three choices: eyebrows, moustache, or bowtie. If your pose matches mine on the beat, you step out for the rest of that round.

## How to run it

### 1. Demonstrate gestures and practice rhythm (2 minutes)

Explain the three gestures, each made using two extended fingers: eyebrows (across the forehead), moustache (between nose and upper lip), or bowtie (at the neck collar). Demonstrate the repeating cadence: pat thighs twice, clap hands twice, pat thighs twice, then strike one gesture. Practice this pattern together for 20 seconds. Ensure everyone freezes their gesture cleanly on the final beat without hesitating.

### 2. Run elimination rounds (2 minutes)

Lead the rhythm as the initial caller. On the gesture beat, reveal a pose at the exact moment participants reveal theirs. Any player showing the same pose steps back or lowers their hands. Those who stepped out remain active by clapping the rhythm along with the group. Continue repeating the cycle every few seconds until one or two players remain, which finishes the round. Start a second round immediately with a volunteer caller if time permits.

### 3. Close and debrief (1 minutes)

Invite all participants back into the active circle. Ask one or two quick questions to draw out observations about anticipation and reaction time before transitioning into the next session.

## Debrief questions

- Did you choose your gestures in advance or react on the spot?
- How did holding a group rhythm affect your attention?

**Finished output:** Completion of one or more rapid elimination rounds with the entire group returned to the active circle.

## Remote

This game relies on zero-latency visual synchronization and does not function as an elimination reaction game over standard video conferencing. Run in-person only.

## Hybrid

Not recommended for hybrid settings due to network latency differences between in-person and remote participants. If attempted, designate online members as rhythm keepers or game callers rather than active competitors.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants may remain seated and perform all pats, claps, and gestures comfortably from their chairs.
- Anyone may choose to serve as an observer, beat keeper, or co-caller without participating in elimination.

## If the session gets stuck

**Players delay showing their gesture until they see what the leader picked.**

Remind everyone that gestures must lock in on the exact beat. Late gestures automatically count as matching the leader.

**Players who step out early disengage or lose interest.**

Have eliminated players keep clapping and patting the rhythm from the perimeter so rounds stay energetic and resolve in under 60 seconds.

## Terms used here

- Bowtie: Two fingers held horizontally across the collar or throat area as one of the three game poses.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in Playmeo activity library, where the entry is attributed to Mark Collard.

Rebuilt using verified public notes confirming the three two-finger positions (eyebrows, moustache, bowtie) and the exact rhythm pattern (pat-pat, clap-clap, pat-pat, gesture). UWT added the 5-minute time allocation, structured three-step delivery, seating options, and debrief prompts.
