# Three Lines Soccer

Participants line up behind three sideline cones to form rotating three-player soccer teams. Trios play short matches where the scoring team stays on the field and fresh players cycle on.

**Time:** 15 minutes. Playworks notes 10 minutes or more; budgeted here for a complete 15-minute rotation session.
**People:** 9 to 24. Three single-file lines off-field feeding two opposing teams of three players each on the field.

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Practice quick team coordination and rotation through continuous small-sided active play.
**Use it when:** Use outdoors or in a gymnasium during an active workshop break or physical warm-up when you want fast participant turnover.
**Skip it when:** Skip when the venue lacks safe running space, when athletic footwear is unavailable, or when physical sports present injury or accessibility mismatches.

## Materials and tools

- 1 standard soccer ball (size 4 or 5)
- 4 field corner cones
- 4 goal marker cones (2 per goal)
- 3 lineup marker cones
- 1 whistle or handheld timer

## Before participants arrive

1. Mark a small playing field (roughly 20 by 30 paces) with 4 corner cones.
2. Set up two small goals using 2 cones each at opposite ends of the field.
3. Place 3 lineup cones in a row along one sideline, spaced 2 paces apart.
4. Check the pitch for trip hazards and place the soccer ball at midfield.

## Say this to open

We are playing Three Lines Soccer. Line up evenly behind these three sideline cones. The first person in each line steps out to form Team A. The second person in each line steps out to form Team B. Team A and Team B play three versus three. The first team to score stays on the field. The conceding team heads to the back of the lines, and the next three players step on to challenge with kickoff. Let us begin.

## How to run it

### 1. Form lines and review rules (3 minutes)

Divide participants evenly behind the three sideline cones. Walk the field boundaries and state safety rules: keep passes low, no slide tackles, and honor boundaries. Check comprehension by asking one participant to summarize how lines rotate on and off the pitch.

### 2. Start initial match (3 minutes)

Call the front player from each line onto the field to form Team A. Call the second player from each line to form Team B. Have one representative from each team play Rock Paper Scissors for the opening kickoff. Start the timer for a ninety-second round.

### 3. Run continuous rotations (7 minutes)

When a team scores, they stay on the field. The conceding team leaves and each player joins the back of a line. The front player from each line steps on as the new team and receives kickoff. If ninety seconds elapse without a goal, have waiting lines count down from ten. Both teams exit and six fresh players enter. If a team wins three games in a row, give them three claps and retire both sides.

### 4. Field debrief (2 minutes)

Gather the group at midfield around the ball. Ask two participants to share what helped their trio organize instantly after stepping onto the pitch. Close play.

## Debrief questions

- How did your trio coordinate roles immediately after stepping out of line?
- What helped your team maintain defense during the rapid ninety-second rounds?

**Finished output:** A series of completed three-versus-three mini-matches with continuous group rotation.

## Remote

This physical field game requires running and kicking in person and cannot be run online. A separate, non-physical team coordination option is an online breakout spreadsheet puzzle, though it does not provide physical soccer play.

## Hybrid

Hybrid delivery is not recommended because remote attendees cannot participate in physical soccer matches fairly. Remote participants can optionally serve as remote match timer managers or scorekeepers over video stream.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants may choose non-running roles including sideline referee, scorekeeper, ball retriever, or timer manager.
- Anyone may pass on active physical play simply by taking a non-running officiating role without disclosing personal reasons.

## If the session gets stuck

**One dominant team stays on the field too long, leaving waiting players idle.**

Enforce the three-win cap strictly: lead three group claps and rotate six fresh players onto the field immediately.

**Lines become uneven as players return from the pitch.**

Direct returning players to join the shortest line rather than their original line to keep queues balanced.

## Terms used here

- Three claps: A group recognition ritual where all participants clap in unison three times to celebrate and retire a squad after three straight wins.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in the Playworks Game Library under 'Three Lines Soccer'.

Retained the Playworks three-line setup, Rock Paper Scissors opening kickoff, oncoming team kickoff rule on score, countdown mechanic, and three-win cap. Added explicit field dimensions, exact step word counts under 90 words, UWT timing, and non-running choice roles.
