# Magic Shoes

Teams plan and execute a crossing over a marked floor space using imaginary shoes that each person can wear only once in one direction. Groups test logic and safe physical escorting or carrying techniques to transfer everyone to the opposite safe zone.

**Time:** 25 minutes. UWT standard 25-minute allocation for a 15 to 30 minute source challenge
**People:** 5 to 24. Parallel teams of 5 to 8 participants. Odd remainders form groups within this range (such as two groups of 6 and one of 5 for 17 people), or join as team strategists and rule auditors.

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Test collective resource sequencing and coordination under strict movement constraints.
**Use it when:** Use when a team needs a physical, low-equipment lateral thinking puzzle to examine how they plan, manage scarce assets, and adapt when an approach stalls.
**Skip it when:** Skip when participants cannot engage in physical movement or close proximity, or when the venue lacks 10 meters of clear flat floor.

## Materials and tools

- 2 rolls of masking tape or rope to mark boundaries
- 1 timer or stopwatch
- Scratch paper and pens for planning (1 set per team)

## Before participants arrive

1. Mark two parallel boundary lines roughly 8 to 10 meters apart on a clean, unobstructed floor.
2. Label one line Safe Zone A and the opposite line Safe Zone B. The floor between lines is the pit.

## Say this to open

Your goal is to move your entire team across the pit from Safe Zone A to Safe Zone B. You have one pair of imaginary magic shoes. The person wearing them can walk safely across the floor. However, each person may put on the shoes only once during the entire exercise, and only to travel in one single direction. Anyone who touches the pit floor without wearing the shoes must return to Safe Zone A. You have five minutes to plan your sequence before anyone steps into the pit.

## How to run it

### 1. Briefing and setup (3 minutes)

Deliver the opening script and set physical safety ground rules. Emphasize that no participant may be forced into physical contact or carrying. Direct teams to gather in Safe Zone A. Hand out scratch paper and pens for planning.

### 2. Strategy and planning (5 minutes)

Teams confer in Safe Zone A without touching the pit. They deduce how to return the shoes or escort team members across, since no person can wear the shoes back. Teams establish roles, confirm physical comfort, and map the order of crossings.

### 3. Traversing execution (12 minutes)

Start the crossing phase. Teams execute their plan. Track who wears the shoes to ensure single use in one direction only. If an unshoed foot touches the pit floor, reset active traversers to Safe Zone A. Immediately halt any unstable lifts.

### 4. Debrief and review (5 minutes)

Gather the full room. Ask two debrief questions about resource constraints and plan adaptation. Take 3 to 4 team reflections on how their initial sequence held up against physical realities.

## Debrief questions

- What initial assumption broke down once execution started?
- How did your team handle the constraint that shoe wearers could travel only in one direction?
- What practices helped ensure every participant felt safe and comfortable during the movement?

**Finished output:** Successful crossing of all participants into Safe Zone B, or a mapped review of the team's resource sequence.

## Remote

This physical traversing task requires in-person presence and cannot run directly online. For remote teams, run an alternative logic puzzle: River Crossing Puzzle. Display a digital whiteboard showing two riverbanks and a shared boat that holds two items. The group must transfer four characters across following strict interaction rules, taking turns logging each round-trip sequence.

## Hybrid

Each hybrid team places a device at Safe Zone A. Remote members participate in the 5-minute planning phase using a shared digital notepad. During execution, remote members track turns on a shared roster, verify each person wears shoes only once in one direction, and give voice or chat prompts to confirm valid moves.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants who prefer not to lift, carry, or be carried can serve as the primary shoe-wearer escort, base strategist, or turn auditor.
- Anyone may decline physical carrying or contact at any moment without penalty, requiring the team to adjust its crossing method.

## If the session gets stuck

**A team attempts high-risk lifts or piggybacks that appear unstable.**

Halt the action immediately. Remind participants that safety overrides completion and require low-ground solutions, such as stepping together or wheelbarrow holds.

**A team concludes that the puzzle is mathematically impossible without multiple shoe uses per person.**

Prompt them with a neutral rule reminder: the rule limits who wears the shoes, not who or what the shoe-wearer can physically escort, hold, or support.

## Terms used here

- Pit: The marked open floor between the two boundaries that unshoed participants cannot touch.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in Playmeo collection, which attributes the method to Mark Collard.

Retained the core Playmeo rules: two safe areas 10 meters apart, a hazardous pit, and one pair of imaginary shoes usable once per person in one direction. UWT added structured timings, explicit subgroup ranges (5 to 8) to accommodate non-standard group sizes, role options to avoid mandatory physical contact, defined hybrid audit protocols, and an explicit alternative label for remote sessions.
