# Shake It Out

Participants stand or sit in a circle and shake each limb in sequence while counting backward from eight to one, finishing with a shared cheer.

**Time:** 5 minutes. Source specifies under 5 minutes; UWT structures this into an exact 5-minute run plan.
**People:** 4 to 24. Whole room standing in a loose circle, spaced so limbs can move freely without contact.

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Reset physical focus and establish rhythm through synchronized whole-body counting.
**Use it when:** After long seated sessions or right after a lunch break when group energy drops.
**Skip it when:** When participants need quiet analytical focus, or when noisy, synchronized shouting would disrupt nearby meetings.

## Materials and tools

- None

## Before participants arrive

1. Ensure sufficient open floor space for participants to stand or sit an arm's length apart without bumping into chairs or neighbors.

## Say this to open

Let us stand up or find a comfortable seated spot where you have space to move. We will shake out our right hand, left hand, right foot, and left foot in turn. We count down together with every shake: first eight per limb, then four, two, and one, ending with a group call. Choose your own range of movement.

## How to run it

### 1. Agree on pattern and ending cheer (1 minutes)

Explain the sequence: right hand, left hand, right leg, left leg. Ask the group to select a single word to shout together on the final beat (for example, 'Go!' or 'Reset'). Check that everyone has clear space around them.

### 2. Perform the eight and four rounds (2 minutes)

Lead the group in shaking the right hand eight times while chanting aloud from 1 to 8. Immediately switch to the left hand for 8, right foot for 8, left foot for 8. Without pausing the tempo, repeat the entire sequence for 4 shakes per limb.

### 3. Perform the two, one, and cheer round (1 minutes)

Continue directly into 2 shakes per limb (1-2), then 1 shake per limb (1, 1, 1, 1). Right after the final left foot shake, lead the entire room in shouting the agreed word while raising both arms or cheering.

### 4. Brief reset and transition (1 minutes)

Take two deep breaths together. Direct participants back to their seats or on to the next agenda item.

## Debrief questions

- How did the tempo shift affect your focus as the counts got shorter?
- What difference did moving together make compared to taking a static stretch break?

**Finished output:** Completion of the synchronized physical countdown and unified call.

## Remote

All participants switch cameras on. Ensure everyone steps back enough from their webcams to move freely. Mute all participants except the facilitator to avoid audio latency, while encouraging participants to count aloud loudly in their own spaces.

## Hybrid

Room participants form a circle facing the primary room display. Remote participants turn cameras on. Remote participants keep microphones muted to avoid acoustic echo and lag, matching the room facilitator's visual cadence and movement cues.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants may remain seated and shake fingers, tap toes, or nod their head instead of full limb extensions.
- Anyone may opt out of moving and instead serve as the official cadence counter or simply watch without explanation.

## If the session gets stuck

**Participants fall out of sync or rush the count ahead of the facilitator.**

Exaggerate your vocal volume and use steady downbeats with your own arm to pull the room back to a common tempo.

**Someone has balance concerns standing on one foot during the leg shakes.**

Explicitly prompt that feet can remain lightly touching the floor, heel tapping, or that participants may hold the back of a sturdy chair.

## Terms used here

- Cadence: The regular rhythmic speed at which the counts and shakes take place.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in Relationship Makers Handbook, page 355.

Retained the limb countdown mechanic and final cheer from the Relationship Makers Handbook record. The source text featured an inconsistent pattern (mentioning 16 then 8, 4, 4, 2, 1); UWT streamlined the countdown starting at 8 to keep the exercise safely within a crisp 5-minute block. Added seated options, audio latency rules for remote/hybrid delivery, and neutral transition steps.
