# Velcro Circle

Participants practice snapping quickly between two defined circle sizes and postures on the facilitator's call. The group establishes a shared physical shorthand for reassembling quickly throughout a session.

**Time:** 5 minutes. Source suggests 1 to 2 minutes; UWT expands to 5 minutes to allow proper setup, practice calls, and access framing.
**People:** 4 to 24. Whole group in a single standing circle

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Establish shared group call-and-response cues to form tight or wide circles quickly without verbal nagging.
**Use it when:** Use at the start of an active workshop when participants will repeatedly transition between standing circles and small breakouts.
**Skip it when:** Skip if the room lacks open floor space or if participants prefer not to stand or navigate close physical proximity.

## Materials and tools

- No special materials.

## Before participants arrive

1. Clear a central floor area large enough for the entire group to form an open circle with elbows flared.

## Say this to open

We will establish two fast ways to gather as a whole team today. Let us learn the two shapes now so we can snap into them quickly whenever called.

## How to run it

### 1. Calibrate the Velcro Circle (1 minutes)

Ask the group to gather in a tight circle. Arms stay at their sides. Participants stand close enough that upper arms touch, or if avoiding physical contact, stand a few inches apart. State clearly: Whenever I call Velcro Circle, this is the exact size and position to take.

### 2. Calibrate the Superhero Circle (1 minutes)

Ask everyone to take one large step back. Direct them to place their hands on their hips, chest out, with elbows flared. Adjust spacing until neighboring elbows just touch or hover adjacent. State: Whenever I call Superhero Circle, this is our wide formation.

### 3. Call random switches (2 minutes)

Call out alternating commands in random order, such as Superhero Circle, Velcro Circle, Velcro Circle, Superhero Circle. Give the group three to five seconds to snap into place after each call. Run four to six quick switches.

### 4. Brief debrief and convention agreement (1 minutes)

Pause the game. Ask one or two quick questions to confirm how the group will use these cues during the rest of the day. Stop the drill.

## Debrief questions

- What helped the circle adjust its spacing fastest?
- How should we signal someone if the circle is crowding too tightly?

**Finished output:** A rehearsed group agreement on two physical gathering cues for subsequent transitions.

## Remote

This activity depends on physical proximity and cannot work online without becoming a completely different exercise. For an online video call, run a visual framing drill instead: call Close Up for participants to lean forward filling their camera frame, and Wide Shot for participants to sit back with hands on hips.

## Hybrid

Do not attempt to link remote and in-person participants in a single physical circle. If running a hybrid meeting, run the physical drill with in-person participants while an online co-facilitator leads remote participants in the camera framing variation.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants may take part while seated in a wheelchair or chair by joining the perimeter and adjusting arm distance without requiring physical contact.
- Participants who prefer personal space may leave a visible gap or hold an arm raised as a spacer without touching neighbors.
- Anyone may step out of the circle to act as the call caller or timekeeper without explanation.

## If the session gets stuck

**Participants bump into each other or feel their personal space is invaded during Velcro Circle.**

Remind the group that touching is optional; hovering side by side with a two-inch buffer is completely valid.

**The circle breaks into an irregular oval or clogs in the center.**

Have everyone pause, look down at their feet, and adjust together until they can see everyone's face across the ring.

## Terms used here

- Velcro Circle: A tight standing circle where participants stand shoulder-to-shoulder with arms at sides.
- Superhero Circle: A wider circle where participants stand with hands on hips and elbows flared outwards.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in Playmeo documentation, where the activity is attributed to Mark Collard.

Retained the core mechanic and postures from Playmeo. UWT added explicit access options for personal space, non-contact variations, concrete timing, and a hybrid framing limit.
