# Letter to Self

Participants write a private note capturing key insights from a session, seal it in a self-addressed envelope, and receive it back months later.

**Time:** 15 minutes. UWT suggested 15-minute standard allocation for reflection, addressing, and closing remarks
**People:** 4 to 24. Solo reflection followed by voluntary whole-room debrief

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Document individual takeaways and commitments for delayed personal review.
**Use it when:** At the conclusion of a workshop or retreat when participants benefit from revisiting commitments after returning to routine work.
**Skip it when:** When participants lack stable mailing addresses or when the session outcome requires collective public agreements rather than solo reflection.

## Materials and tools

- 1 sheet of writing paper per person
- 1 pen per person
- 1 mailing envelope per person
- 1 postage stamp per person (provided by facilitator)
- 1 collection box or mailing pouch

## Before participants arrive

1. Place paper, pens, envelopes, and postage stamps at each workspace.
2. Set a calendar reminder for the target return date, such as 3 or 6 months ahead.
3. Position the collection box near the room exit.

## Say this to open

Take a few minutes to write a letter to your future self. Record one key lesson from today that you want to remember. Seal it in an envelope addressed to yourself with the stamp provided. I will mail these back to you in six months. Your writing stays completely private.

## How to run it

### 1. Introduce reflection task (2 minutes)

State the return timeline and confirm envelopes remain sealed and confidential. Display the reflection prompt: 'What is one concrete thing you learned today that you want your future self to remember?'

### 2. Write letters silently (7 minutes)

Participants write individually and in silence. A neutral example entry is: 'Remember to test assumptions with the team before finalizing the quarterly project plan.' Participants may use bullet points, sketches, or full paragraphs.

### 3. Seal and address envelopes (3 minutes)

Participants fold their pages, insert them into envelopes, and seal them. They affix a postage stamp and write their full mailing address on the front. Participants who prefer to keep their own letters may retain them immediately.

### 4. Collect envelopes and debrief (3 minutes)

Pass the collection box for completed envelopes. Conduct a brief whole-room debrief on the reflection experience without asking anyone to disclose private text. Take up to 3 voluntary responses across the room.

## Debrief questions

- How easy or difficult was it to select one key takeaway for your future self?
- What difference does it make knowing you will read these notes several months from now?
- Without revealing private details, what broad category of takeaway did you focus on?

**Finished output:** A sealed, stamped, self-addressed envelope containing personal notes placed in the collection box, or retained privately by the participant.

## Remote

Instruct participants to compose a message using an email delay-send function or an online scheduled-delivery tool addressed to their own email and set for the target date. Participants without email scheduling tools may write a paper note, seal it, and place a reminder on their digital calendar for that date.

## Hybrid

In-person participants write physical letters, affix stamps, and deposit sealed envelopes into the collection box. Remote participants schedule delayed self-emails set for the exact same target date.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants may write bullet points, sketch diagrams, or record their reflection on a personal digital device.
- Submitting the envelope to the facilitator is optional; participants may retain their sealed letters immediately without explanation.

## If the session gets stuck

**A participant worries about privacy or someone opening their letter.**

Remind them that envelopes are sealed by the author and mailed directly without being opened. Reiterate that keeping the letter right now is completely acceptable.

**Participants finish writing in under three minutes and wait idly.**

Invite them to add one specific obstacle they might encounter when putting this takeaway into practice.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in Playmeo library; Playmeo attributes the activity to Mark Collard.

Retained the delayed-delivery personal reflection mechanic from Playmeo. UWT supplied explicit time bands, envelope handling steps, postage provisioning, email scheduling options for remote contexts, and clear opt-out pathways.
