# Paired Shares

Participants form pairs or trios to answer a prompt, switch speakers halfway through the round, and change partners for a second question.

**Time:** 10 minutes. UWT suggested 10-minute running plan based on a multi-round partner swap structure.
**People:** 4 to 24. Pairs; one triad if total count is odd.

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Exchange initial perspectives and warm up speaking participation in parallel two-person conversations.
**Use it when:** Use at the start of a meeting or workshop to get every person talking without putting individuals on the spot in front of the whole room.
**Skip it when:** Skip when the session topic requires confidential individual thinking or when the room is already deeply engaged in focused task work.

## Materials and tools

- Slide or flip chart displaying the discussion prompts
- Chime or timekeeping device for the facilitator

## Before participants arrive

1. Arrange seating or open floor space so people can face one partner without shouting over neighbors.
2. Post two clear discussion prompts where all participants can read them.

## Say this to open

Find someone sitting near you to be your partner. If we have an odd number, one group will have three people. The person with the earlier birthday in the calendar year is Person A, and the other is Person B. I will give you a prompt. Person A speaks for 90 seconds while Person B listens. When the chime sounds, swap roles. You always have the choice to answer broadly, keep your response brief, or pass on any details you prefer to keep private.

## How to run it

### 1. Form pairs and explain timing (2 minutes)

Read the opening script. Confirm every person has a partner or has joined the single triad. Display the first question: 'What is one project or hobby outside of work that took your attention this week?'

### 2. Run round one (3 minutes)

Start the timer. Person A speaks for 90 seconds while Person B listens. Sound the chime at 90 seconds and direct partners to swap so Person B speaks for 90 seconds. If a triad formed, direct them to take three 60-second turns.

### 3. Switch partners and run round two (3 minutes)

Instruct participants to quickly find a new partner they have not spoken with yet. For this new pairing, designate Person A as the person with the shorter hair or alphabetically first name. Display the second question: 'What is one practical thing you hope to get out of our session today?' Run two 90-second speaking turns (or three 60-second turns for a triad), chiming at the midpoint switch.

### 4. Brief room check-in (2 minutes)

Call the room back together. Invite two or three brief observations from volunteers using the debrief questions. Ensure participants keep specific confidences from their partners intact.

## Debrief questions

- What common themes or insights emerged across your conversations?
- How did having a dedicated listening turn change the way you paid attention?

**Finished output:** Every participant completes two short speaking and listening exchanges; no written artifacts produced.

## Remote

Use breakout rooms of two people. Send the prompt in chat before opening rooms. Run Round 1 for 3 minutes, bring participants back, reassign random pairs, paste the second prompt, and run Round 2 for 3 minutes.

## Hybrid

Pair remote participants into dedicated virtual breakout rooms and in-person participants with co-located partners. Broadcast prompts and time cues simultaneously via screen share and audio.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants may share as much or as little personal detail as they wish, or choose a purely professional response.
- A participant who prefers not to speak can act as a dedicated timekeeper and listener, or use the chat window in remote settings.

## If the session gets stuck

**One person dominates the conversation and does not leave time for the partner.**

Announce the halfway switch clearly with an auditory cue like a chime, reminding groups that it is strictly the other partner's turn to speak.

**An odd number of participants leaves someone without a partner.**

Form exactly one triad immediately and remind that group to divide the total round time into three equal shares.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in Playmeo library records where it is credited to Mark Collard.

Retained the core Playmeo structure of paired sharing with prompt questions and partner swapping. Added structured timed intervals (90 seconds per speaker), role designations (Person A and B via birthday check), concrete neutral prompt questions, and accessibility options.
