# Calming Visualisations

Participants settle into a restful posture and listen to a spoken guided imagery script. They reflect individually on paper or share observations aloud if they choose.

**Time:** 8 minutes. Playmeo suggests 2 to 5 minutes; expanded to 8 minutes to include physical settling, reading, and gentle reintegration.
**People:** 4 to 24. Individual participation within a whole-room setting

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Help participants pause physical activity, settle their attention, and observe their current state without forced participation.
**Use it when:** Use during a transition after high-energy tasks, after a difficult conversation, or at the start of a session requiring focused attention.
**Skip it when:** Skip when the group needs active physical movement or when participants express discomfort with quiet, introspective exercises.

## Materials and tools

- Spoken script for facilitator
- Optional blank paper and pens for individual notes (1 sheet and 1 pen per person)

## Before participants arrive

1. Arrange seating so participants have personal space.
2. Minimize background noise and soften room lighting if convenient.

## Say this to open

We are going to take eight minutes for a quiet visualization. You may sit in your chair or find a comfortable spot on the floor. You do not need to close your eyes; you can simply rest your gaze on a spot on the floor. Everything in this exercise is optional. If you prefer not to follow the prompts, feel free to sit quietly and rest.

## How to run it

### 1. Settle posture (1 minutes)

Invite participants to find a balanced, comfortable seated or floor position. Speak the opening script. Allow the remaining seconds for movement to settle and room noise to drop.

### 2. Guide imagery (4 minutes)

Read the calming visualization script in participant_materials slowly and evenly. Pause for 5 to 10 seconds between lines to give participants time to imagine the details.

### 3. Return attention (1 minutes)

Gently invite participants to bring attention back to the room. Prompt small physical movements such as wiggling fingers, rolling shoulders, or taking a deeper breath.

### 4. Optional reflection (2 minutes)

Give participants 60 seconds of silent reflection or optional note-taking. Ask 1 or 2 voluntary debrief questions. Take up to 2 brief verbal contributions. Allow participants to keep reflections private.

## Debrief questions

- What sensory detail was easiest to imagine during the script?
- What, if anything, shifted in your physical tension or focus?

**Finished output:** A completed collective quiet pause and optional personal reflection notes.

## Remote

Ask remote participants to mute microphones. Offer the choice to turn cameras off for privacy during the visualization. Speak clearly when calling the group back. Collect debrief responses via chat for those who want to share.

## Hybrid

Ensure the facilitator microphone captures a steady, gentle voice without room echo so remote participants hear clearly. Remote participants can turn cameras off. In-person participants remain seated quietly. Debrief takes spoken responses from both room and remote feeds equally.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants may keep eyes open, resting their gaze downwards.
- Participants may opt out of following the imagery and simply rest quietly without explanation.
- No sharing of personal reflections is required.

## If the session gets stuck

**A participant falls asleep or appears visibly uncomfortable.**

Do not single them out. Continue reading calmly. The return phase provides gentle prompts to reorient.

**External noise interrupts the quiet atmosphere.**

Acknowledge the sound calmly in your instructions, noting that outside sounds are normal and can simply pass through awareness.

## Terms used here

- Guided imagery: A technique where spoken cues prompt the listener to imagine sensory details of a calm scene.

## Participant material: Facilitator Visualization Script: The Open Path

Take a steady breath in, and let it out slowly.

Picture an open path stretching out in front of you on a mild, quiet day.

Notice the ground beneath your feet. It is solid, steady, and clear.

Look around at the surroundings. Notice the colors, whether soft greens, warm earth, or open skies.

Feel the air around you. Notice whether it feels warm, cool, or still.

Take another step forward at an unhurried pace. You have nowhere else you need to be right now.

Listen to the quiet sounds around this path. Perhaps a light breeze or distant rustle.

Pause for a moment on the path. Notice how your body feels when standing still in this open space.

Take a gentle breath in, and release it.

Begin to leave the path behind, bringing that sense of stillness back with you into this room.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in the Playmeo activity database under the title Calming Visualisations, credited to Lisa Laura.

Playmeo provides a framework for leading calming visualizations without supplying a complete public script text. UWT supplied a concrete, non-clinical imagery script ('The Open Path'), established an 8-minute timetable with distinct settling and reintegration steps, and added explicit choice and access boundaries.
