# The Comeback Album

Participants map career or strategic inspirations into musical riffs, cluster them into chords, arrange them into progressions, and draft an anthem statement for their next chapter. The exercise produces a structured board of themes ending in a single guiding brand essence.

**Time:** 60 minutes. Adapted to a 60-minute workshop format from the original multi-hour personal coaching game
**People:** 3 to 12. Independent generation followed by whole-group sorting and progression mapping

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Synthesize professional and personal inspirations into an ordered sequence of priorities and an agreed core direction.
**Use it when:** Use during leadership transitions, strategic reboots, or creative career planning where standard business models feel too rigid.
**Skip it when:** Skip when groups need precise operational budgeting, legal contracts, or quantitative metrics.

## Materials and tools

- Standard sticky notes (3x3 inch, 2 pads per person)
- Star-shaped sticky notes (1 pad per group)
- Letter sticky notes or pre-cut chord cards labeled A, C, D, E, G, Am, Em
- Scratch paper (optional, 1 pad per person)
- Markers (1 per person)
- Wall space or butcher paper (minimum 6 feet wide)
- Digital timer

## Before participants arrive

1. Clear a wide wall or whiteboard into three zones: Riffs (raw ideas), Progressions (clusters), and Hit Anthem (final statement).
2. Lay out pads of square sticky notes, chord labels, star notes, and scratch paper at every seat.

## Say this to open

Welcome. Today we are treating our next chapter like writing a comeback album. You will start by writing down raw inspirations as musical riffs. We will group these riffs into chords, arrange them into progressions, and extract our single hit anthem for where we go next.

## How to run it

### 1. Write raw riffs (10 minutes)

Participants write one idea per sticky note answering what they want to stand for in their work, life, and craft. Aim for volume. For example, write 'coaching younger designers' or 'straight talk with clients' rather than broad service titles. Stop when the timer sounds.

### 2. Cluster into chords (15 minutes)

Participants post their notes on the wall and cluster them into related themes. Working together, eliminate duplicate or irrelevant outliers. Assign a major chord letter (such as A, C, or G) to major core themes and a minor chord letter (such as Am, Em) to supporting themes.

### 3. Build progressions (15 minutes)

Arrange the chord clusters into a linear sequence from left to right that shows how one theme leads naturally into the next. Read the progression aloud as a narrative chain. For example: 'Grounding ethics (A) leads to mentoring staff (D), which leads to bold client work (E).' Adjust cluster positions until the sequence flows logically.

### 4. Extract the hit anthem (10 minutes)

Place star-shaped sticky notes on the strongest single takeaway from each chord cluster. Have the group draft a single sentence on a star note that captures the core formula or brand essence of the whole sequence. This sentence serves as the anthem.

### 5. Debrief and capture (10 minutes)

Hear two or three reactions to the final sequence and anthem. Review next steps for photographing the wall and archiving the progression.

## Debrief questions

- Which chord in the progression feels most central to your daily decisions?
- Where did an unexpected theme outrank an established technical skill?
- How does the final anthem sentence shift your near-term priorities?

**Finished output:** A sequenced wall progression of thematic clusters labeled with chord names, highlighted with star priorities, and capped by a one-sentence anthem.

## Remote

Use an online whiteboard with templates for square stickies, musical chord tags (A, C, D, Em), and star shapes. Participants brainstorm in quiet mode, group stickies concurrently using cursors, and write the final anthem in a shared text block.

## Hybrid

Assign a room facilitator to transcribe remote stickies onto physical notes and mirror physical chord movements on a shared digital whiteboard visible to all. Remote participants read their riffs aloud or paste them in chat for immediate posting.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants may keep personal notes private on scratch paper and post only work-related riffs.
- Playing actual instruments is entirely optional; participants can hum, read aloud, or speak plain sentences without musical skill.
- Participants may pass during the debrief without giving a reason.

## If the session gets stuck

**The session focuses exclusively on tactical job duties instead of overarching direction.**

Ask participants to write two sticky notes about values or relationship ethics that make the work satisfying.

**Participants get bogged down trying to follow precise musical theory.**

Remind the room that chords and progressions are metaphors for strong anchors and logical sequences, not a music theory exam.

## Terms used here

- Riff: A brief, repeating musical idea, used here as a raw sticky-note inspiration.
- Chord: A harmonic group of musical notes, used here to represent a cluster of related ideas.
- Progression: A series of chords played in sequence, used here as an ordered sequence of priorities.
- Hit Anthem: The definitive centerpiece song, used here as the core brand essence or summary statement.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in a Gamestorming blog post by Bob Knorpp titled 'Making The Game Come Alive', detailing a bespoke exercise called 'The Comeback Album of The Decade Game'.

The evidence from Bob Knorpp's Gamestorming case study outlines a 3-hour coaching session titled 'The Comeback Album of The Decade Game' containing riffs, chords, progressions, and hit formulas. UWT compressed the sequence into a standalone 60-minute team run sheet, standardized timing, added specific debrief questions, access choices, and remote accommodations, while keeping the musical taxonomy and grouping mechanics.
