# Multivine Traverse

Participants take turns traversing a low foot cable while holding suspended overhead ropes for balance. At least two active ground spotters track the climber step-by-step to provide physical support.

**Time:** 40 minutes. UWT suggested 40 minutes for up to 12 participants taking turns on a single installed element, allowing roughly 2 to 3 minutes per attempt plus debrief.
**People:** 3 to 12. Triads (1 climber, 2 spotters) rotating on the element, with extra members serving as secondary spotters or observers.

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Practice collaborative physical spotting discipline, balance, and clear verbal communication on a low challenge course element.
**Use it when:** Use at an accredited low ropes course facility when developing group spotting habits, mutual support, and physical coordination.
**Skip it when:** Skip if an engineered low ropes course with compliant ground surfacing is unavailable, or if the group cannot execute active physical spotting safely.

## Materials and tools

- Installed low ropes course multivine element (horizontal foot wire suspended roughly 12 to 18 inches above ground, with hanging rope vines suspended overhead)
- Appropriate closed-toe footwear for all participants
- Whistle or timer for the facilitator

## Before participants arrive

1. Inspect the multivine course element, foot cable tension, and overhead hanging ropes according to challenge course standards.
2. Clear debris, roots, and trip hazards from the ground landing zone on both sides of the cable.
3. Review basic spotting stance: athletic posture, knees flexed, thumbs tucked, hands at chest height, eyes focused on the climber torso.

## Say this to open

Welcome to the Multivine Traverse. Your goal is to move across the foot wire as far as you choose, reaching between hanging vines for balance. Each climber works with at least two spotters moving alongside them. Any extra team members will serve as secondary spotters or observers. Stepping off at any moment is completely acceptable.

## How to run it

### 1. Safety brief and role briefing (5 minutes)

Explain the safety rules, spotting stance, and element layout. Deliver the opening script. Review spotting expectations: spotters stay one half-step behind the climber's torso with active hands. Note that any extra participants beyond a triad will serve as secondary spotters or observers.

### 2. Position first team (3 minutes)

Form the working team. One participant prepares to traverse while two position themselves as primary spotters, one on each side of the cable. Assign any remaining members of the active group as secondary spotters or observers.

### 3. Traverse attempts and rotations (26 minutes)

The climber steps onto the wire and advances across, reaching between overhead vines. Spotters move alongside, maintaining ready hands. When the climber steps off or completes the cable, the team resets. Rotate roles every 2 to 3 minutes so each willing participant gets a traverse turn.

### 4. Debrief (6 minutes)

Gather the group near the element. Ask two or three debrief questions, inviting up to four brief observations across climbers, spotters, and observers.

## Debrief questions

- What communication between the spotters and the climber helped you feel secure?
- If you spotted, what adjustments did you make to stay in position as the climber moved?
- For those observing, what patterns in balance or team coordination stood out from the ground?

**Finished output:** Every participant completes, spots, or observes a traverse attempt under standard spotting protocol, followed by a brief group reflection.

## Remote

This physical ropes course challenge cannot run online. A related remote alternative focusing on verbal navigation is blind coordinate navigation in a shared virtual breakout room.

## Hybrid

Not applicable. A physical low ropes course installation cannot accommodate remote participants.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants choose whether to traverse, spot, or observe. Anyone can step down or decline stepping onto the cable at any point without explanation.
- Spotting requires standing, arm readiness, and lateral movement. Participants who prefer not to spot can serve as course observers or safety counters.

## If the session gets stuck

**Spotters drift ahead of or behind the climber, leaving the climber unsupported.**

Pause the traverse immediately. Remind spotters to match the climber's pace step-by-step before resuming.

**A participant feels anxious about stepping onto the wire.**

Affirm that standing on the wire is entirely optional. Invite them to serve as a primary spotter, secondary spotter, or debrief observer.

## Terms used here

- Spotter: A participant standing on the ground alertly tracking a climber to cushion or stabilize them if they slip or step off.
- Traverse: Moving sideways across a horizontal element rather than climbing up or down.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed on Playmeo, credited to Mark Collard. Represents a standard low challenge course element.

Retained the low ropes course setup, 3-person core spotting structure, and traverse mechanics described in the Playmeo source. UWT expanded the activity duration to 40 minutes so larger groups can rotate safely, integrated secondary spotters and observer roles into the opening briefing, and added dedicated debrief questions for all participant roles.
