# Inside-Outside Circles

Participants form two concentric circles facing each other, exchange brief thoughts on a prompt with a partner, and rotate to talk with new partners.

**Time:** 15 minutes. UWT facilitation plan based on 5 to 15 minute range observed in source records.
**People:** 4 to 24. Two concentric rings of facing pairs (or two parallel lines)

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Provide structured, rapid peer-to-peer exchanges on a specific prompt with multiple people in a short time.
**Use it when:** Use before introducing new material, after a reading, or prior to a group discussion to help everyone verbalize their initial thoughts.
**Skip it when:** Skip when the space is too cramped for concentric circles or two parallel lines, or when quiet, in-depth paired problem solving is required instead of brief exchanges.

## Materials and tools

- Whiteboard, flipchart, or slide display for showing prompts
- Marker or dry-erase pen
- Timer or chime

## Before participants arrive

1. Clear enough open floor space for participants to stand in two concentric rings facing each other.
2. Write two or three concise discussion prompts on the board or display before starting.

## Say this to open

We are going to form two concentric circles facing each other to share quick thoughts on a couple of questions. The inside circle will speak first, then say pass, and the outside partner will share. After each exchange, the outside circle will take one step sideways to meet a new partner.

## How to run it

### 1. Form concentric circles (3 minutes)

Ask the group to count off 1 and 2. Group 1 stands in an inner circle facing outward. Group 2 forms an outer circle facing inward, matching up one-to-one with a person in the inner circle. If an odd number is present, the spare participant acts as the official timekeeper alongside the facilitator or forms a triad with one pair.

### 2. Pose prompt and think quietly (2 minutes)

Display Prompt 1 on the board. For example: 'What is one key challenge in our current workflow?' Give everyone 30 seconds of quiet thinking time to collect their thoughts before speaking.

### 3. Run first exchange and rotation (4 minutes)

Signal the start. The inside partner speaks for 60 seconds while the outside partner listens. The inside partner says 'pass', and the outside partner shares for 60 seconds. Ring a chime at 2 minutes. Instruct the outside circle to take one step to their right to face a new partner.

### 4. Run second exchange with new prompt (3 minutes)

Display Prompt 2 on the board. For example: 'What is one practical fix you would test first?' Give 15 seconds to read it. Outer partners speak first this time for 60 seconds, say 'pass', and inside partners respond for 60 seconds.

### 5. Conduct whole-room debrief (3 minutes)

Invite everyone to face the center or return to seats. Call on 2 or 3 volunteers to share a common pattern or surprising viewpoint they heard from their partners.

## Debrief questions

- What common theme did you hear from your partners?
- What was one idea you heard that differed from your own starting point?

**Finished output:** Every participant speaks and listens to at least two different partners on the selected prompts; quiet note-taking or passing on speaking is allowed.

## Remote

Online, concentric circles translate into sequential 1-on-1 breakout rooms. Set up automated 2-person breakout rooms lasting 2.5 minutes each. Broadcast the prompt via announcement. Return everyone to the main room, display prompt 2, shuffle rooms automatically, and repeat for a second round.

## Hybrid

In hybrid setups, pair in-person participants with each other in concentric rings or parallel lines in the room. Pair remote participants simultaneously into 1-on-1 virtual breakout rooms using identical prompts and timers. Combine both groups for the final 3-minute whole-room debrief.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants may sit facing each other in chairs or along two facing rows of desks if standing or circular movement is difficult.
- Anyone may pass on speaking during their turn and say 'I am just listening this round' without giving a reason.

## If the session gets stuck

**Room noise gets too loud to hear partners clearly.**

Remind participants to use close conversational voices, or convert the circles into two long parallel lines with more space between pairs.

**One partner dominates the entire speaking turn.**

Use the chime to enforce strict equal splits: 60 seconds for person A, chime, then 60 seconds for person B.

## Terms used here

- Concentric circles: Two circles of different sizes around the same center point, one inside the other.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in The Teacher Toolkit under the title 'Inside/Outside Circles'.

Retained core concentric circle rotation mechanic, the 'pass' verbal handoff, and the suggested variations (desk rows) from The Teacher Toolkit. Added explicit step timings, quiet thinking pauses, an odd-number handling rule, and a standardized 2-question debrief structure.
