# Inner Circle Outer Circle Walk and Talk

Partners pair up to discuss listening, split into concentric circles to share reflections while their partners listen, swap places, and conclude with a paired walking debrief.

**Time:** 20 minutes. Relationship Makers Handbook notes 15 to 30 minutes; structured here as a 20-minute facilitation plan.
**People:** 6 to 20. Pairs split into an inner active circle and an outer listening ring, then rejoin to walk.

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Exchange perspectives on listening and collaboration through structured paired sharing, concentric circle rounds, and a walking debrief.
**Use it when:** Use during orientations, team kickoffs, or retreats to break up sitting and let participants meet peers through sequential listening and speaking roles.
**Skip it when:** Skip when the venue cannot support walking or concentric circles, or when the team needs to address urgent, technical problem solving.

## Materials and tools

- One index card per person
- One pen per person
- Flip chart or slide displaying discussion prompts

## Before participants arrive

1. Clear a central open floor area for an inner circle and outer circle, either standing or with concentric chairs.
2. Display the pair prompt and two circle prompts where all participants can read them.

## Say this to open

Find a partner you do not know well. Take an index card and a pen. First, introduce yourselves and discuss what makes a good listener. Next, one partner will step into an inner circle to share briefly while the other listens, then you will switch. After both circles finish, you will rejoin your partner for a walking conversation.

## How to run it

### 1. Pair introductions and listening check (4 minutes)

Participants pair up. Read or display the first prompt: 'What makes a good listener?' Partners introduce themselves and each take two minutes to share their view. Each person writes notes on their card about what makes a good listener, noting helpful phrases from their partner's response.

### 2. Inner circle round one (4 minutes)

Partner A steps into the inner circle, facing inward. Partner B stands or sits on the outer circle behind them to listen. Partner As take turns around the circle answering prompt 1: 'What is one work value that guides your decisions?' Keep answers under 20 seconds each so up to 10 speakers can share within the time. Outer partners take brief notes.

### 3. Inner circle round two (4 minutes)

Partners swap places. Partner B moves to the inner circle; Partner A moves to the outer circle. Partner Bs take turns answering prompt 2: 'What is one condition that helps you do your best work with others?' Each speaker keeps their answer under 20 seconds. Outer circle partners listen and record notes.

### 4. Walk and talk debrief (5 minutes)

Partners reunite and walk around the room or perimeter. They compare what they heard across the two circles, discuss what stood out, and identify one listening practice they want to use today. If space or mobility is limited, partners may walk outside the room or remain seated together.

### 5. Full room wrap-up (3 minutes)

Gather the full group. Ask two or three volunteer pairs to share one practical listening commitment that came out of their walk. Allow participants to keep their index cards.

## Debrief questions

- What was it like to observe and take notes without being able to reply right away?
- What common patterns did you notice across the answers in the inner circle?
- How will the listening qualities you identified shape how you work with each other today?

**Finished output:** Individual index cards containing peer listening notes and practical working commitments.

## Remote

Form pairs in breakout rooms for 4 minutes to answer the warm-up prompt. Bring all to the main room. Designate Partner As to turn on cameras and take turns answering prompt 1 in the open room for 4 minutes while Partner Bs mute and take notes. Swap roles for prompt 2. Send original pairs into breakout rooms for a 5-minute paired debrief.

## Hybrid

Pair in-person participants with in-person colleagues, and remote participants with remote colleagues. In-person pairs use physical floor space for the warm-up and walk-and-talk debrief. Remote pairs use virtual breakout rooms for warm-up and debrief. During inner circle rounds, both cohorts run concentric fishbowls in parallel: in-person participants form physical concentric circles, while remote attendees use camera-on for the inner circle and camera-off for the outer circle. Both cohorts share the full-room wrap-up via a central conference microphone and screen.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants may sit in concentric rings of chairs instead of standing.
- Walking is optional; pairs may hold their final conversation seated in place.
- Anyone may pass on speaking in the inner circle by saying 'Pass' to the next person.
- Physical contact suggested in older records, such as putting arms around each other, is excluded.

## If the session gets stuck

**There is an odd number of participants.**

Form one triad. One triad member serves as a dedicated observer and note-taker during both inner circle rounds while the other two participate in their respective circles. All three rejoin for the walk and talk debrief.

**Speakers exceed their 20-second turn in the circle.**

Use a soft chime or visual hand signal at 15 seconds to keep the turns moving swiftly across the circle.

## Terms used here

- Concentric circles: Two circles arranged one inside the other, allowing an inner group to speak while an outer group listens.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in the Relationship Makers Handbook, pages 213-214.

Retained the pair formation, split inner and outer circles, prompt sharing, and walking debrief from the Relationship Makers Handbook. Removed physical contact prompts (arms around each other) to respect personal boundaries. Standardized professional prompts displayed on a flip chart or slide rather than paper handouts, added index cards for individual notes, and capped circle speaking turns at 20 seconds.
