# Butt Charades

Teams guess short words spelled out in mid-air by a teammate moving their hips as if writing with a pen. Teams race to decode as many words as possible within a set time limit.

**Time:** 10 minutes. Based on 5-minute Playmeo active play round plus explanation and debrief.
**People:** 6 to 24. Parallel teams of 3 to 5 people.

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Energize a group through active movement and nonverbal decoding.
**Use it when:** Use during high-energy breaks, informal team socials, or active warm-ups where participants welcome physical silliness.
**Skip it when:** Skip in formal business settings, environments with strict mobility limitations, or groups where body-focused humor causes discomfort.

## Materials and tools

- Pre-written prompt cards with simple 4- to 5-letter words
- Countdown timer or stopwatch
- Whistle or bell to signal correct guesses

## Before participants arrive

1. Prepare index cards with common 4-letter and 5-letter words.
2. Clear an open room so each communicator stands 5 to 10 meters away from their guessing team.

## Say this to open

We are going to play Butt Charades. Each team will send up one communicator. I will give your communicator a four-letter or five-letter word. Their job is to turn their back to you and write each letter in the air using their hips, as if holding a giant marker. Your job is to call out guesses. When you get the word right, send up a new communicator for the next word.

## How to run it

### 1. Form teams and explain rules (2 minutes)

Divide participants into teams of 3 to 5 people. Line teams up along one side of the room. Invite each team to select their first communicator, who stands 5 to 10 meters away facing away from their team toward the facilitator.

### 2. Distribute initial words (1 minutes)

Hand each starting communicator their first word card or whisper it privately. Ensure the rest of the team cannot hear or see the word.

### 3. Run guessing rounds (5 minutes)

Start the 5-minute timer. Communicators trace capital letters in the air using hip movements. Teammates shout guesses. When a team guesses correctly, the communicator confirms it, runs back, tags a teammate, and the new communicator comes to the facilitator for the next word. Continue until time expires.

### 4. Tally and debrief (2 minutes)

Stop play when the timer sounds. Count total words correctly guessed by each team. Ask two brief reflection questions to wrap up.

## Debrief questions

- What made certain letters easier or harder to read in motion?
- How did your team adjust your guessing strategy as the rounds progressed?

**Finished output:** A final count of correctly decoded words per team.

## Remote

This activity requires full-body physical movement across a clear room and cannot be run identically online. For a video meeting alternative, play Nose Pictionary: the communicator turns on their camera, keeps their hands still, and traces a word in the air using only the tip of their nose while teammates type guesses into the chat.

## Hybrid

Hybrid play splits cohesion because remote players struggle with depth perception on wide camera angles. If necessary, assign remote players strictly as guessers for a remote communicator who tilts their camera back, while in-person teams play together in the physical room.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants can opt to trace letters using an elbow, shoulder, or foot if hip movement is uncomfortable or inaccessible.
- Anyone may choose a non-communicator role as a guesser, timekeeper, or score tracker without needing to disclose reasons.

## If the session gets stuck

**Communicators accidentally turn sideways or use their hands to gesture.**

Remind communicators to keep hands on their hips or across their chest and keep their backs facing their team.

**Teammates cannot tell when one letter ends and the next begins.**

Instruct communicators to pause and clap or tap their thigh between individual letters.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed on Playmeo, where the activity is attributed to Mark Collard.

Retained core game mechanic, distance setup (5 to 10 meters), and word parameters from Playmeo. UWT added structured role-rotation steps, a concrete word bank, remote alternative (Nose Pictionary), accessibility modifications, and reflection debrief.
