# One Word Puzzle

Pairs solve an expanding letter puzzle round by round until seven letters remain. The facilitator reveals the literal phrase solution and leads a discussion on unstated assumptions.

**Time:** 10 minutes. Playmeo lists 5 to 10 minutes; 10 minutes fits the four progressive clues and debrief.
**People:** 4 to 24. Pairs working in parallel; with an odd number of people, form one group of three.

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Demonstrate how implicit mental constraints narrow creative problem solving.
**Use it when:** Use during kickoffs for strategy, problem-solving, or design sessions to demonstrate unstated mental constraints.
**Skip it when:** Skip when participants are not fluent in English or during tense meetings where riddle-based exercises induce frustration.

## Materials and tools

- One set of 7 large letter cards (E, D, N, R, O, W, O)
- 1 sheet of scratch paper per pair
- 1 pen per pair
- Digital presentation slide deck showing letters sequentially for remote/hybrid views

## Before participants arrive

1. Write each letter (E, D, N, R, O, W, O) on its own large card or slide.
2. Stack cards so letters reveal in order: first E-D-N together, then R, then O, then W, then the final O.

## Say this to open

We are going to solve a fast puzzle in pairs. If we have an odd count, one team will be a trio. I will display a group of letters. Your task is to use every visible letter to spell one word. Write your idea on paper and keep it quiet until I ask for hands.

## How to run it

### 1. Introduce first three letters (2 minutes)

Read opening script. Display letters E, D, N. Give pairs 30 seconds to rearrange all three letters to spell one word. Ask for answers and confirm valid options (END or DEN).

### 2. Build the anagram sequence (3 minutes)

Add letter R (letters E, D, N, R). Give pairs 45 seconds to form a four-letter word, then confirm answers (REND, NERD). Add letter O (letters E, D, N, R, O). Allow 45 seconds and confirm answers (DRONE, REDON). Add letter W (letters E, D, N, R, O, W). Allow 45 seconds and confirm answers (WONDER, DOWNER).

### 3. Present final letter and reveal (2 minutes)

Add the second letter O, presenting all seven letters: E, D, N, R, O, W, O. Tell pairs: 'Use all seven letters to spell one word.' Give 60 seconds of silent collaboration. When teams hit a wall, reveal the answer: the letters spell the exact two-word phrase 'ONE WORD'.

### 4. Debrief assumptions (3 minutes)

Lead a brief whole-room reflection on cognitive framing. Call on 2 or 3 participants to answer debrief questions about unstated rules they followed.

## Debrief questions

- What unstated rule did your brain assume during the final step?
- How did the success of earlier rounds narrow your search pattern?
- Where in our team work do past patterns cause us to overlook simple alternative solutions?

**Finished output:** Shared recognition of unstated assumptions after attempting the lateral puzzle solution.

## Remote

Screen share letters progressively or paste them into chat. Pairs work in private direct messages or quick breakouts, keeping answers hidden until the facilitator calls for typed answers in public chat.

## Hybrid

Display letter cards on camera or through a shared slide screen. Remote attendees form remote pairs or trios in breakout channels while in-room attendees work with table partners.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants may choose to observe their partner quietly or work solo without public speaking.
- Write letters visibly on cards or a board so oral spelling is not required.

## If the session gets stuck

**A participant blurts out the lateral trick answer early in the activity.**

Acknowledge the discovery quietly, ask that person to keep the secret, and let other pairs continue working through the progression.

**Participants feel tricked or defensive when the solution is revealed.**

Validate their response. Point out that the brain naturally looks for patterns from past rounds, which makes the exercise an effective demonstration of implicit bias.

## Terms used here

- Anagram: A word or phrase created by rearranging the letters of another word or phrase.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in Playmeo Activity Database, credited to Mark Collard.

Retained the seven-letter sequence (E-D-N-R-O-W-O) and lateral reveal from Playmeo. Added explicit odd-number participant grouping, structured partner pacing, confirmation checks per step, and debrief discussion prompts.
