# Group Juggle

Participants form a circle and establish a fixed, cross-circle passing sequence using one tossable object. The group then maintains that exact sequence while juggling multiple items simultaneously without drops.

**Time:** 15 minutes. UWT suggested 15-minute plan based on the source 15 to 30 minute activity profile.
**People:** 6 to 20. Single standing or seated circle of 6 to 20 people

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Sustain a repeatable cross-team handoff order under increasing cognitive load and item volume.
**Use it when:** Use when an intact group needs to examine handoff quality, eye-contact norms, and pacing breakdowns during workflow acceleration.
**Skip it when:** Skip when participants have acute arm mobility restrictions, visual conditions that make tracking thrown objects unsafe, or when meeting online without room for physical movement.

## Materials and tools

- 3 soft tossable items per circle (such as beanbags, fleece balls, or foam balls)

## Before participants arrive

1. Clear chairs and tables to leave an open circle with unobstructed floor space.
2. Place 3 soft tossable items on a nearby table within facilitator reach.

## Say this to open

We will build a fixed passing pattern across our circle. Person 1 tosses a beanbag across the circle to someone who has not received it yet. Keep your hand raised until you catch it once. Notice who throws to you and who you throw to.

## How to run it

### 1. Establish the sequence (4 minutes)

Person 1 makes eye contact, says the receiver's name, and tosses a soft item underhand across the circle to an unvisited person. That receiver chooses another unvisited person, says their name, and tosses. Continue until every person has received and passed the item once. The final receiver tosses back to Person 1. Repeat this exact order twice until everyone remembers their sender and receiver without raising hands.

### 2. Add secondary item (4 minutes)

Person 1 launches the primary item along the established route. When it reaches the third person, hand a second item to Person 1 to send down the same route. Both items follow the identical order simultaneously. If an item drops, that receiver retrieves it, calls their target, and resumes. Run until both items complete two clean cycles back to Person 1.

### 3. Introduce third item (4 minutes)

Hand a third item to Person 1. Challenge the group to keep all three items cycling smoothly across the circle for four minutes. If items bunch up, the holder must pause, establish eye contact, and release them one at a time along the sequence. Call time at four minutes.

### 4. Debrief the communication pattern (3 minutes)

Gather the circle. Take three or four brief observations answering the debrief questions. Focus on how communication, pacing, and readiness shifted as volume increased.

## Debrief questions

- What specific habits helped your receiver catch cleanly as more items entered the air?
- Where did the flow back up, and what agreement cleared the bottleneck?
- How did you balance watching for the incoming item versus ensuring your outgoing toss was caught?

**Finished output:** Completion of multi-item passing cycles with identified group agreements for reliable handoffs under pressure.

## Remote

Physical tossing requires an in-person circle and cannot run online. Run a verbal alternative called Category Pass. List participants in fixed order 1 through N in chat. Person 1 names a category item to Person 2 (for example, Person 2, stapler). Person 2 confirms and names a new item to Person 3, until Person N names one back to Person 1 to complete the loop. Person 1 introduces a second category along that same order. Both word chains circulate simultaneously for 8 minutes, followed by debrief.

## Hybrid

Physical juggling across a mixed room is impractical. In-person members complete the physical toss while remote members form an online breakout group to run the verbal Category Pass alternative concurrently. Both groups reconvene for a combined debrief.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants may sit in chairs arranged within the circle rather than standing.
- Anyone who prefers not to catch or throw may serve as launch timer, sequence spotter, or drop recorder outside the circle.
- Participants may pass without explanation during the debrief.

## If the session gets stuck

**Items collide in mid-air because tosses are thrown flat and hard.**

Pause the round and instruct the circle to throw gentle, high-arcing underhand tosses that peak above head height.

**A participant forgets who to throw to mid-round.**

Pause briefly and ask the recipient to raise their hand, then resume play immediately.

## Terms used here

- Tossable: A soft, lightweight object such as a beanbag or fleece ball that does not roll far or cause injury when dropped.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in Playmeo documentation, where it is attributed to Mark Collard.

Retained the sequential passing progression from Playmeo. UWT structured the session into a 15-minute sequence, adjusted object counts to match setup, clarified that every participant receives and throws once to complete the fixed loop, and supplied a concrete verbal variation for remote groups.
