# Toe to Toe

Pairs stand heel-to-toe along a single line, hold hands, and attempt to unbalance each other using slow, controlled movements.

**Time:** 5 minutes. 5 minutes based on typical quick energizer delivery and source under-5-minute band
**People:** 4 to 24. Pairs arranged with open floor space around each duo

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Test physical balance and motor control in pairs through a slow-motion physical challenge.
**Use it when:** Use during an in-person workshop or training session when the room needs a quick physical energizer that shifts attention to balance and coordination.
**Skip it when:** Skip when participants have balance limitations, mobility impairments, space constraints, or preferences against close physical contact.

## Materials and tools

- No special materials.

## Before participants arrive

1. Ensure the room has an open floor area free of tripping hazards, chairs, and sharp table corners.

## Say this to open

Find a partner and face each other. We are going to test our balance in slow motion. If you prefer not to do physical balance or hand contact today, you can serve as an official slow-motion referee. For everyone competing, align your feet on a straight line, touch toes, take your partner's hand, and see who can remain steady.

## How to run it

### 1. Demonstrate the stance and rules (1 minutes)

Explain the rules. Demonstrate with a volunteer. Place the toe of your right shoe directly touching the toe of your partner's right shoe. Position your left foot directly behind your right heel along a straight line, creating a single heel-to-toe stance. Clasp right hands in a standard handshake grip. Emphasize that all pulls and pushes must be in slow motion. Sudden jerks or rapid pulls are not allowed.

### 2. Run round one (1 minutes)

Tell pairs to begin on your signal. Partners attempt to cause each other to step off the line or lose their footing using only slow, continuous force through the clasped hand. A round ends when either person lifts or shifts a foot off the line.

### 3. Switch feet and hands (1 minutes)

Have partners reset, switching their stance: left toes touching, right foot behind left heel, and left hands clasped. Signal the start of round two under the same slow-motion rule.

### 4. Swap partners for a final round (1 minutes)

Direct participants to find a new partner quickly. Odd participants or non-participating observers rotate in. Run one more round with each pair choosing their preferred foot forward.

### 5. Debrief (1 minutes)

Call the room back together. Ask two brief questions to the whole room, taking two or three volunteer responses.

## Debrief questions

- What physical adjustments helped you maintain stability on such a narrow base?
- How did moving in slow motion change your ability to react compared to sudden force?

**Finished output:** Every participant completes two to three brief balance trials or acts as a referee.

## Remote

This activity requires direct physical contact and interpersonal mechanical advantage, so it cannot be run directly online. An online alternative is a solo balance challenge: participants stand on one leg on camera while tracing letters in the air with their opposite foot for 30 seconds without touching down.

## Hybrid

Hybrid delivery is not practical for the paired physical contact. Keep in-person participants paired together in the room while remote attendees perform the solo balance alternative on camera.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants may opt out of physical contact or balance challenges to act as referees who monitor slow-motion compliance and declare round winners.
- Participants may step out or release their grip at any moment without penalty or explanation.

## If the session gets stuck

**Participants pull or yank suddenly, risking a fall.**

Pause the round immediately. Remind everyone that sudden jerking disqualifies the player. Demonstrate what three-second slow continuous tension looks like.

**An odd number of participants leaves someone without a partner.**

Assign the remaining participant as a referee for a nearby pair, or invite them to pair with the facilitator if comfortable.

## Terms used here

- Tandem stance: Standing with one foot directly in front of the other, heel to toe, along a single line.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in Playmeo collection, which attributes the activity to Mark Collard.

Retained the exact physical stance, handshake mechanic, and slow-motion balance contest from the Playmeo record. Added structured step timings, neutral facilitator scripts, safety reminders, and clear opt-out referee roles.
