# Bumpity Bump Bump Bump

Participants form a circle around a central caller who points at individuals and demands a neighbor's name, their own name, or the caller's name before a rhythmic phrase ends. Quick turns reinforce name recall across the whole group.

**Time:** 10 minutes. UWT suggested 10-minute duration, aligned with typical 5 to 15 minute warm-up bands
**People:** 7 to 24. Single inward-facing circle with one person in the center

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Practice rapid verbal recall of peers' names through repetitive, low-stakes prompts in a circle format.
**Use it when:** Use at the start of a session or training day when group members are newly introduced and need practice learning each other's names.
**Skip it when:** Skip when participants already know one another well, or when rapid verbal speed tests cause undue social anxiety.

## Materials and tools

- Name tags for participants (optional but recommended)
- Digital roster or ordered text list of participant names (for remote format)
- Tablets with front-facing camera, one per remote attendee (for hybrid format)
- Headsets with microphone, one per remote attendee (for hybrid format)

## Before participants arrive

1. Clear an open floor space large enough for all participants to form a single inward-facing circle.
2. Ensure all participants have introduced their names once around the room before beginning.

## Say this to open

We are going to play a quick name game called Bumpity Bump Bump Bump. The caller in the middle points at someone while saying one of four words: LEFT, RIGHT, YOU, or ME. If the caller says LEFT, name the person to your left. If RIGHT, name the person to your right. If YOU, shout your own name. If ME, shout the caller's name. Say the correct name before the caller finishes saying 'Bumpity bump bump bump.' If you miss or run out of time, you swap spots with the caller. Let's try two slow practice rounds together first.

## How to run it

### 1. Explain rules and commands (2 minutes)

Gather everyone into an inward-facing circle. Take the center spot as caller. Explain the four commands: LEFT targets the person directly to the left, RIGHT targets the person directly to the right, YOU targets the pointed-at participant's own name, and ME targets the caller's name. Give one neutral example: if the center person points at Taylor and shouts 'ME', Taylor must say the center person's name.

### 2. Run practice turns (2 minutes)

Conduct two or three practice turns at half tempo. Point at individual participants, issue a call, and recite 'Bumpity bump bump bump' slowly so the group grasps the response requirement without penalty.

### 3. Play active circle rounds (4 minutes)

Begin full-speed play. The caller points firmly, states a command, and speaks 'Bumpity bump bump bump' at a steady conversational pace. If the person answers accurately in time, the caller immediately targets someone else. If the person gives an incorrect name, freezes, or finishes after the phrase, they swap places with that caller. For groups of 16 or more, place two callers in the center facing opposite halves. If a participant misses, they swap only with the specific caller who prompted them.

### 4. Debrief and close (2 minutes)

Call time on the game. Ask everyone to remain in their circle positions. Invite two or three participants to share quick observations on memory tricks using the debrief questions.

## Debrief questions

- Which names were easiest to recall quickly, and why?
- What strategy helped you retrieve a name under time pressure?

**Finished output:** Completion of rapid name-recall rounds where all active participants hear and vocalize peer names.

## Remote

Video gallery tiles shift order on different screens. For remote play, post a numbered text roster in the meeting chat. Replace 'LEFT' and 'RIGHT' with 'ABOVE' and 'BELOW'. The caller names a target and states a command, for example, 'Sarah, ABOVE.' Sarah must name the person listed directly above her on the chat roster before the caller says 'Bumpity bump bump bump.' If Sarah misses, she becomes the caller. If top or bottom entries are prompted, wrap around the list.

## Hybrid

Place on-site participants in the physical circle. Pair each remote participant with an on-site partner holding a tablet linked to the call. When the caller points at a tablet, the remote participant speaks through the speaker. If the remote player misses the prompt, their on-site partner steps into the center as caller, relaying prompts selected by the remote player over headset.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants may sit on chairs placed directly in the circle perimeter instead of standing.
- Anyone who prefers not to take the center spot may remain in the circle perimeter and designate a proxy to stand in the center.
- Participants may pass at any time by raising both hands open, prompting the caller to turn immediately to another person without penalty.

## If the session gets stuck

**The caller speaks the phrase too fast for reasonable responses.**

Set a shared rhythm by having the circle tap a slow hand-to-thigh cadence before the caller speaks.

**A participant freezes because they do not know their neighbor's name.**

Allow neighbors to point visibly to their name tags or give an audible whisper hint if the target hesitates.

## Terms used here

- Caller: The participant in the center of the circle who points and delivers the directional command.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in Playmeo collection, which attributes the activity to Mark Collard.

Retains the Playmeo circle mechanic, the four commands (LEFT, RIGHT, YOU, ME), and the signature prompt phrase. UWT structured the activity into timed facilitator steps, clarified the swap rule for multiple callers, adapted the mechanic for remote chat rosters, added hybrid proxy guidelines, and provided non-standing access adjustments.
