# The Psychiatrist

One volunteer leaves while the room agrees on a secret pattern rule for answering questions. The volunteer returns, interviews participants one at a time, and tries to deduce the hidden rule.

**Time:** 15 minutes. UWT 15-minute plan runs one full round with dedicated debrief. Multiple rounds require adding 8 to 10 minutes per round.
**People:** 6 to 24. Whole group in a single circle facing one volunteer guesser; for groups over 12, questions are distributed around the single circle so all remain engaged.

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Practice pattern detection, intentional inquiry, and active listening under constrained communication.
**Use it when:** Use as an analytical warm-up or perception exercise during communication, questioning skills, or problem-solving workshops.
**Skip it when:** Skip when participants are uncomfortable being singled out in an individual guessing role or when sessions require direct, task-oriented focus.

## Materials and tools

- Index cards or notepad paper (1 pad)
- Pen or marker (1)
- Facilitator prompt sheet with sample pattern rules

## Before participants arrive

1. Arrange chairs in a single open circle so everyone can see and hear all speakers clearly.
2. Have sample pattern rules ready on a reference card in case the group needs ideas quickly.

## Say this to open

In this exercise, one person steps out of the room as our investigator, traditionally called the psychiatrist. While they are outside, the rest of us pick a single secret rule that everyone must follow when answering questions. When our investigator returns, they will interview you one by one to deduce our hidden rule.

## How to run it

### 1. Frame exercise and send volunteer out (2 minutes)

Explain the game concept using the opening script. Ask for one volunteer investigator. Send that person completely out of the room and out of earshot. Remind the group that their answers must remain truthful while adhering strictly to the hidden rule.

### 2. Select and record secret rule (2 minutes)

Lead the room in choosing one clear, detectable rule. Write it down on an index card and display it where everyone inside can see it. Neutral example: 'Every answer must begin with the first letter of your own first name' or 'Every response must contain exactly three words.' Confirm that everyone understands how to apply it.

### 3. Conduct interview and deduction round (6 minutes)

Invite the investigator back into the room. The investigator calls on participants one by one, asking any question they like. The chosen participant answers out loud while obeying the rule. The investigator can guess the rule at any point. If they struggle after 4 minutes, provide one gentle category hint, such as whether the rule relates to words, sequence, or body language. End the round when the rule is correctly guessed or time expires.

### 4. Debrief questioning and pattern detection (5 minutes)

Bring the group together. Ask 2 or 3 participants to reflect on the experience using the debrief questions. Focus on which questioning styles revealed the pattern and how respondents balanced following the rule with normal conversation.

## Debrief questions

- Which questioning strategies helped isolate the underlying pattern most effectively?
- How did responders balance sticking to the secret rule without giving away the trick immediately?
- What assumptions slowed down the deduction process?

**Finished output:** A solved or revealed pattern rule and an identified set of effective inquiry tactics.

## Remote

Place the investigator in the platform waiting room or an isolated breakout room. The main room agrees on the secret rule via meeting chat. Bring the investigator back. The investigator calls on participants by name or raised hands, and respondents answer on unmuted audio while following the rule.

## Hybrid

Select an in-person attendee as the investigator so room departures are seamless. Ensure remote participants are connected via room speakers and cameras. When the investigator steps out, remote participants help pick the rule via voice or chat. During the questioning round, the investigator alternates between in-room and online speakers.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants may choose whether to volunteer as the solo investigator or stay in the responder group.
- A responder who cannot quickly formulate a rule-compliant response may raise a flat hand to pass the turn to the next person without penalty.

## If the session gets stuck

**The investigator gets completely stuck and frustrated.**

Provide a narrow hint that eliminates possibilities, such as stating that the rule is about sentence structure rather than physical movement.

**The group selects a rule that is overly complicated, obscure, or hard to follow.**

Intervene during step 2 to redirect the group toward straightforward syntactic or physical rules, such as starting every sentence with a vowel.

## Terms used here

- Investigator: The single participant who steps outside and later interviews the group to deduce the secret rule.
- Pattern rule: A shared constraint followed by all group members when answering questions.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in Playmeo under the title 'The Psychiatrist', attributed to Mark Collard. The underlying method is a long-standing traditional parlor and improv deduction game.

Retained the traditional party game mechanic documented by Playmeo where a solo investigator leaves the room, the group agrees on a secret rule, and the investigator returns to ask questions and deduce the rule. UWT adapted the activity into a structured 15-minute single-round run sheet, resolved group scaling to a unified circle up to 24 participants, added explicit access options including passing, and supplied facilitator reference samples.
