# Space Counting

Pairs race each other by drawing numbers 1 to 30 in the air with an index finger as fast as they can. The first partner to finish signals the end of the round.

**Time:** 5 minutes. UWT suggested duration based on source under-5-minutes tag
**People:** 4 to 24. Pairs; if an odd number is present, one trio or one official timer/referee

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Raise physical alertness and reset group attention between demanding cognitive tasks.
**Use it when:** Use as a quick one-minute to five-minute physical reset when participants show signs of fatigue after prolonged sitting.
**Skip it when:** Skip during somber discussions, high-stakes negotiations, or when participants cannot or prefer not to engage in rapid hand movements.

## Materials and tools

- No special materials.

## Before participants arrive

1. Clear enough floor space for participants to stand or sit facing a partner roughly an arm's length apart.

## Say this to open

Find a partner and face them. Point your index finger forward so it sits about twelve inches away from your partner's finger. When I call 'Go,' trace every number from 1 to 30 in the air as fast as you can. The first person to complete 30 raises a fist to claim the round.

## How to run it

### 1. Pair up and set position (1 minutes)

Ask participants to pair up and stand or sit facing one another. Each person extends one index finger forward, roughly 30 cm (12 inches) away from their partner's extended finger. An extra participant can act as the official round judge or join a trio where three people face inward.

### 2. Run round one (1 minutes)

Call 'Go!' Both partners write the numerals 1 through 30 in the air simultaneously as rapidly as possible. Remind them to trace complete digits. The first person to finish 30 pumps their fist to declare victory.

### 3. Swap partners or hand (2 minutes)

Have participants switch to their non-dominant hand or turn to a new partner. Run a second heat of 1 to 30 using the same rules.

### 4. Debrief and transition (1 minutes)

Convene the whole room. Take two quick verbal observations about how physical pacing and focus shifted, then return to the main agenda.

## Debrief questions

- What happened to the size and clarity of your numbers as you tried to speed up?
- How did shifting from cognitive work to rapid physical movement affect your alertness?

**Finished output:** Completion of two rapid finger-tracing counting heats by all pairs.

## Remote

In a video meeting, pairs stay in the main room or move to breakout rooms. Participants aim their camera at their hand and chest. On 'Go,' partners race to trace 1 to 30 into the camera frame and call out 'Thirty!' or post '30' in the chat to signal completion.

## Hybrid

Pair in-person participants together and remote participants together via breakout rooms or separate meeting pairs. Do not pair an in-person person with a remote person, as camera latency disrupts the shared physical race.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants may trace numbers using small wrist movements, a stylus, a foot, or speak the numbers aloud in sequence instead of drawing in the air.
- Anyone who chooses not to race may serve as the round timer or scorekeeper, or simply observe without giving a reason.

## If the session gets stuck

**Participants scribble indistinguishable blurs instead of identifiable numbers.**

Clarify that each number must be traced recognizably before moving to the next digit, or appoint partners to verify each other's digits.

**An odd number of participants leaves one person without an opponent.**

Create one group of three where all three race simultaneously, or invite the extra participant to be the official starter and judge.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in Playmeo records; the source attributes the activity to Mark Collard.

Retained core finger-in-the-air counting race mechanic from Playmeo and Mark Collard. Added standard 5-minute pacing, non-dominant hand variation, accessibility options, hybrid handling, and short reflection questions.
