# Four Up

Participants sit in a circle and attempt to keep exactly four people standing at any moment without spoken coordination. Standing individuals must sit down within five seconds while others rise to maintain the count.

**Time:** 10 minutes. UWT suggested duration based on a 5 to 15 minute play band.
**People:** 6 to 24. Whole group seated in a single open circle.

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Practice silent group observation, peripheral awareness, and spontaneous coordination under changing conditions.
**Use it when:** Use during a team session when people need physical movement, shared focus, and quick attunement without spoken debate.
**Skip it when:** Skip when participants have acute mobility limitations that make rapid standing uncomfortable, or when the group has fewer than six people.

## Materials and tools

- One chair per participant (or floor space arranged in a circle)
- One stopwatch or visible digital timer for the facilitator
- Whiteboard or flip chart and markers
- Bright colored cards (for remote participants in hybrid setting)

## Before participants arrive

1. Arrange chairs or floor spots in an open circle where every participant can see everyone else.
2. Ensure walking paths inside and around the circle are clear of bags and cords.

## Say this to open

Our goal is simple to state and tricky to sustain: keep exactly four people standing at all times. Anyone may stand at any moment. When you stand, you can stay up for no more than five seconds before you must sit down again. We will do this without talking, pointing, or assigning shifts. Watch the room, read the timing, and let us see how long we can hold the count.

## How to run it

### 1. Explain rules and test action (2 minutes)

Deliver the opening script. Ask the entire group to stand up once and sit down together to confirm physical comfort. Clarify that standing is voluntary and that someone who cannot comfortably stand can raise one arm high instead. Remind everyone that silence starts as soon as the clock begins.

### 2. Run trial round (3 minutes)

Start the timer. Participants stand and sit silently, trying to keep the standing count at exactly four. When the count drops below four or climbs above four, call out the actual count neutrally (such as 'two' or 'five') and reset the timer. Run trial attempts until the group sustains the count for at least ten seconds or the three minutes conclude.

### 3. Run record rounds (3 minutes)

Challenge the group to beat their longest duration. Start each round from zero standing participants. The clock runs as soon as four people stand and stops the instant the standing count changes away from four. Record the longest time achieved on a visible board.

### 4. Debrief rhythm and awareness (2 minutes)

Gather the group while seated. Ask two focused questions about the non-verbal cues and pacing. Take three quick observations from volunteers before moving to the next agenda item.

## Debrief questions

- What visual cues helped you decide when to stand up or stay seated?
- What caused the count to collapse most often: hesitation or too many people jumping in at once?

**Finished output:** A recorded maximum duration in seconds that the group sustained exactly four standing participants.

## Remote

All participants keep cameras on in gallery view. Seated participants stay visible on camera. To stand, participants either physically stand up so their shoulders leave the bottom third of the frame or raise both hands clearly into view. The facilitator tracks the live count against a digital stopwatch.

## Hybrid

In-person participants form a semi-circle facing the main room camera and monitor. Remote participants appear on the room screen. Remote people raise a bright colored card or hand sign that room members can see instantly. The facilitator calls out resets for both groups.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants with limited mobility may raise an arm or hold up an index card instead of physically standing.
- Any participant may choose to act as an official timekeeper or count observer instead of standing.

## If the session gets stuck

**Participants stand up and remain standing motionless for ten seconds or more.**

Enforce the five-second rule out loud: remind participants that each standing turn must end within five seconds.

**One or two vocal members start calling out names or pointing to direct who stands next.**

Pause the clock, reiterate the no-talking and no-signaling constraint, and restart the round from zero.

## Terms used here

- Five-second rule: The maximum continuous duration any individual participant is allowed to remain standing before returning to their seat.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in Playmeo records, which attribute the activity to Mark Collard.

Retained core mechanic and five-second limit from Playmeo sources. UWT added explicit accessibility options (such as arm raising), participant support roles (timekeeper and observer), a hybrid screen configuration, and structured time bands.
