# Friendly Flyers

Pairs fold a paper airplane and write personal traits or facts on its wings without adding their names. After a distance launch, the room inspects each plane in landing order and guesses which pair built it.

**Time:** 20 minutes. UWT suggested 20-minute facilitation structure expanded from source icebreaker outline
**People:** 4 to 24. Pairs; trio if odd count; whole group for launch and guessing

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Reveal personal details and build partner collaboration through a shared hands-on craft and matching challenge.
**Use it when:** Use during team kickoffs or early workshop stages to get participants talking in pairs and learning about colleagues across the room.
**Skip it when:** Skip when physical flight space is unavailable, when flying paper poses a hazard, or when the team prefers purely professional introductions.

## Materials and tools

- 3 to 4 sheets of standard 8.5x11 or A4 paper per pair
- 1 black or blue pen per participant
- 1 roll of painter tape to mark launch line

## Before participants arrive

1. Clear an open flight runway at least 5 to 8 meters long across the room.
2. Place a strip of painter tape on the floor as the starting launch line.
3. Place paper sheets and pens at paired workspaces spaced around the perimeter.

## Say this to open

Find a partner. Together, you will design and fold a single paper airplane built for flight distance. Once folded, write two or three true facts or characteristics about each partner directly on the wings or inside folds, but do not write your names. Later we will launch them, read the clues, and guess whose plane is whose.

## How to run it

### 1. Form pairs and fold plane (6 minutes)

Participants pair up. If there is an odd count, create one group of three. Pairs select paper and fold one airplane designed to fly as far as possible. Facilitator gives a two-minute warning to finish folding.

### 2. Inscribe anonymous traits (4 minutes)

Each partner writes 2 to 3 personal characteristics, hobbies, or obscure facts on their plane. Do not write names. Example: 'Enjoys baking sourdough and has run a marathon.' Ensure writing is legible but conceal the plane from nearby pairs.

### 3. Launch contest (3 minutes)

All pairs gather behind the taped launch line. One partner per team throws their plane across the open runway in a single coordinated wave. Planes remain where they come to rest on the floor.

### 4. Read clues and guess pairs (5 minutes)

Start with the plane that traveled the furthest distance. Facilitator picks it up and reads the written clues aloud. The whole room calls out guesses for which pair created it. Once guessed or after three wrong guesses, the creators identify themselves. Repeat in descending distance order down to the closest flyer.

### 5. Debrief (2 minutes)

Gather the room to reflect on what participants learned about their partner during construction versus what they learned about the wider group during the matching phase.

## Debrief questions

- What did you learn about your partner while collaborating on the airplane design?
- Which clue surprised you the most during the whole-group reveal?
- How did deciding what to write compare to deciding how to fold the plane?

**Finished output:** A set of flown paper airplanes annotated with team member characteristics and revealed identities.

## Remote

Online delivery loses the physical flight mechanic. To adapt digitally, pairs collaborate in breakout rooms for 6 minutes using a shared digital whiteboard to sketch or assemble a digital flyer icon and list their anonymous facts on sticky notes attached to it. The facilitator moves all icons into a main board, shuffles them, and presents them one by one for the room to guess the authors in chat.

## Hybrid

In-person pairs build physical planes while remote participants work in virtual breakout pairs posting to a shared digital board. A designated in-person surrogate folds and throws a proxy plane marked with the remote pair's identifier. The facilitator reads both physical and digital clues in launch order so all participants can guess via chat or voice.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants with limited manual dexterity may direct their partner on folding steps or focus entirely on selecting and dictating the traits to write.
- Throwing is optional; a partner or facilitator can launch the plane on behalf of the pair.
- Participants may choose low-stakes, neutral facts (such as favorite meal or preferred work music) to maintain privacy.

## If the session gets stuck

**A plane dives immediately or fails to fly forward.**

Reassure the pair that every plane gets read regardless of distance; distance only sets the reading sequence.

**Participants accidentally write their names on the plane.**

Provide a scrap piece of tape or marker to black out names before the throw.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in Teampedia (2010) under Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 2.5 and cataloged in the SessionLab IAF Library.

Retained the core mechanic from Teampedia of folding a paper airplane in pairs, annotating it with personal traits, throwing for distance, and reading clues in distance order to guess identities. Added concrete time allocations, explicit group size boundaries, Launch runway setup specifications, and non-disclosure options for personal facts.
