# Icebreaker Bingo

Participants mingle or rotate through brief conversations to find peers who match prompts on a bingo card, recording names to complete a line.

**Time:** 15 minutes. UWT established 15 minute facilitation structure
**People:** 8 to 24. Individual roving mingle or timed rotating pairs

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Enable participants to discover shared interests and backgrounds across the room through structured conversational prompts.
**Use it when:** At the start of a multi-team workshop, cohort launch, or onboarding event to start informal cross-room conversations.
**Skip it when:** When the group is smaller than 8 people, when all members already know each other well, or during sensitive retrospective and decision-making sessions.

## Materials and tools

- One printed 5x5 bingo card per person (or digital card link)
- One pen or pencil per person
- One countdown timer visible to the room

## Before participants arrive

1. Print enough bingo card sheets for all participants.
2. Place one card and pen at each chair, or paste the digital card URL into the meeting chat.

## Say this to open

Take a look at your bingo card. Each square contains a specific habit, skill, or experience. Your goal is to mingle, ask questions, and find someone who matches each prompt. When someone confirms a match, write their first name in that square. Each peer's name can only appear once on your card. Aim to complete any horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line of five squares.

## How to run it

### 1. Explain rules and set boundaries (3 minutes)

Distribute cards and pens. Read the opening script. State the key rule: a participant's name can appear only once on any other person's card. Remind everyone that any question can be answered with 'pass' without explanation.

### 2. Mingle and interview peers (8 minutes)

Start the 8 minute timer. Participants move through the room and ask one-on-one questions. For example: 'Marcus, do you cook a signature dish?' If Marcus says yes, the interviewer writes Marcus in that square. If Marcus says no, the interviewer asks a different prompt or finds a new partner. When a player completes a five-square line, they shout 'Bingo!' and continue mingling to fill additional squares until the timer ends.

### 3. Verify completed lines (2 minutes)

Call the room back together. Invite up to two volunteers who called Bingo to read their completed line of five prompts and the peer names recorded. Anyone who prefers to keep their card private may decline to share.

### 4. Debrief the room (2 minutes)

Gather the whole group. Pose the debrief questions to the room. Collect 2 or 3 brief volunteer responses for each question.

## Debrief questions

- Which square was the hardest to find a match for across the room?
- What was one unexpected skill or habit you learned about a peer today?

**Finished output:** Completed bingo grids with recorded peer names, or cards kept private at participant choice.

## Remote

Run in digital breakout rooms. Share the digital card link in the main chat. Place participants in randomized pairs or trios for 4 rounds of 2 minutes each. Rotate breakout assignments after every 2 minute round so participants interview new partners. Return to the main room for line sharing and debrief.

## Hybrid

Set up 2 to 4 dedicated laptop stations around the physical room where remote participants appear on individual video feeds. In-person participants rotate to those laptop stations to interview remote peers. Remote participants who are not at an in-person station converse in assigned pairs via video breakout rooms. Remote and in-person participants share completed lines in the main room audio feed.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants with mobility constraints can remain seated while peers circulate to their table.
- Anyone may decline to answer any specific question by saying 'pass' without giving a reason.
- Anyone who prefers not to mingle may serve as the room caller and timer keeper, tracking announced matches from the main table.

## If the session gets stuck

**Participants bunch up in existing cliques.**

Remind players that each peer name can only be used once on a card, requiring conversations with at least four different people to make a line.

**Conversations run long and participants get stuck at one square.**

Call out time reminders at 4 minutes and 2 minutes remaining, prompting participants to switch partners.

Observed on Icebreaker-Games.org as an interactive bingo card generator and printable icebreaker tool.

Retained the 5x5 grid layout, prompt phrases, and peer-finding mechanic from Icebreaker-Games.org generator evidence. UWT added a 15 minute facilitation structure, explicit once-per-card name limits, non-disruptive Bingo calling during the mingle, verification steps, and debrief prompts.
