# Firsts

Participants take rapid turns sharing a one-sentence answer to a prompt about a personal or professional milestone. The group completes two short rounds to learn background details without long speeches.

**Time:** 10 minutes. 10 minutes based on source guidance.
**People:** 3 to 24. Whole room for groups up to 12; split into parallel subgroups of 4 to 8 for groups of 13 to 24.

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Share low-stakes personal or professional background details across a group within strict time boundaries.
**Use it when:** Use at the start of a meeting or workshop when team members need a quick, structured check-in that keeps speaking time balanced.
**Skip it when:** Skip when the group is larger than 24 people without breakout subgroups, or when the team requires an in-depth problem-solving activity.

## Materials and tools

- Prompt sheet with 5 to 7 milestone questions
- Timer or visible clock
- Digital display, whiteboard, or virtual chat to display active prompts

## Before participants arrive

1. Select 2 prompts from the prompt list for today's session, plus 1 backup prompt.
2. Write or project the chosen prompts where all participants can see them.

## Say this to open

We will do two fast rounds called Firsts. I will announce a prompt about a milestone, such as your first job or first concert. When it is your turn, give your answer in a single sentence. You have up to 20 seconds. You can always say pass if you prefer not to share. Let us keep it snappy.

## How to run it

### 1. Set up turn order and model prompt (2 minutes)

Display the first prompt. State the speaking order so people know when they are next. Model a brief, one-sentence answer. Example: My first paid job was washing dishes at an Italian diner when I was fifteen.

### 2. Run round one (3 minutes)

Follow the speaking order around the room or subgroup. Give each person up to 20 seconds to share their one-sentence answer. Gently stop anyone who starts telling an extended story by reminding them to keep it to one sentence. Participants may say pass without giving a reason.

### 3. Run round two (3 minutes)

Announce the second prompt. Run through the same group order, reversing direction or starting from a new point in the circle so different people speak first. Keep the 20-second limit per turn.

### 4. Close and reflect (2 minutes)

Bring the whole room together. Ask participants what surprised them or what common threads emerged. Invite two or three quick observations from the room.


## Debrief questions

- Which milestone answer surprised you the most today?
- What unexpected common experiences or contrasts did you notice across the group?
- Which prompt would you like to explore further during lunch or open breaks?

**Finished output:** Two rounds of brief milestone responses completed by all participants who chose to speak.

## Remote

Post the speaking order and the active prompt into the video meeting chat. Participants unmute in order or type their one-sentence response directly into the chat if audio is unavailable.

## Hybrid

Establish an integrated speaking order that alternates between in-room and remote speakers. Display the active prompt on the in-room projector and in the virtual meeting chat so all attendees see the same question simultaneously.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants may type answers in chat or pass silently by nodding or saying pass.
- All prompts focus on everyday events and avoid probing for sensitive, traumatic, or strictly family-based disclosures.

## If the session gets stuck

**A participant begins a long narrative about the history of their first car or trip.**

Intervene gently with a smile: Hold that story for the coffee break; what was the make and model in one sentence?

**A participant cannot recall an answer to the specific prompt.**

Offer an immediate alternative: You can name a recent first, substitute another prompt from the board, or simply pass.

- What was your very first paid job?
- What was the first presentation you ever gave in public?
- What was your first software tool, computer, or work device?

Personal Milestones:
- What was the first music album or single you ever bought?
- What was the first concert or live performance you attended?
- What was the destination of your first independent trip or vacation?

Recent Firsts:
- What is something new you tried for the first time in the past month?
- What is the newest hobby or skill you started exploring recently?
