# Up Nelson

Two teams sit across a table hiding and seeking a concealed coin. The searching team attempts to eliminate empty hands one by one until only the coin remains under the final hand.

**Time:** 15 minutes. 15 minutes accommodates opening setup, one complete competitive round with careful hand eliminations, and a structured debrief.
**People:** 8 to 16. Two equal teams of 4 to 8 participants seated facing each other across a long table.

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Practice observing physical cues, collective decision-making, and nonverbal coordination under playful pressure.
**Use it when:** Use during team retreats, energizer breaks, or communication workshops when participants need a seated activity focused on team observation and bluffing.
**Skip it when:** Skip when participants cannot sit at a shared table, when slamming hands or elbows on a hard surface causes pain, or in quiet environments where table thumping will disturb others.

## Materials and tools

- 1 coin (such as a quarter or large token) per table
- 1 long table with chairs on both sides

## Before participants arrive

1. Place chairs along both sides of a sturdy table so participants face each other directly.
2. Place the coin on the table.

## Say this to open

We are playing Up Nelson, a classic bluffing game. One team hides a coin under the table. The other team tries to eliminate all empty hands first, leaving the coin hidden under the very last hand. If the coin appears before the final hand, the hiding team keeps possession. Let us form two teams and pick a searching Captain.

## How to run it

### 1. Form teams and set roles (3 minutes)

Divide participants into two facing teams of 4 to 8 people. If the total number is odd, invite one person to serve as referee and timekeeper. Hand the coin to the hiding team. Ask the searching team to nominate one player as Captain. Deliver the opening script and confirm the rules.

### 2. Pass and hide below the table (2 minutes)

The hiding team lowers all hands beneath the table. They have up to 15 seconds to secretly pass the coin or fake passes among themselves. The searching Captain watches their postures, shoulders, and eye contact to detect where the coin might travel.

### 3. Call commands and bring hands up (3 minutes)

When ready, the searching Captain calls 'UP NELSON!' All hiding players must immediately raise clenched fists and plant elbows on the tabletop. Raising fists early forfeits possession. Any searching team member may then call 'DOWN NELSON!' at any moment. On that cue, hiding players simultaneously slap all palms flat on the table to mask the coin drop.

### 4. Eliminate hands and resolve round (5 minutes)

Searchers confer to deduce the coin location. Any searcher can order a hiding player to squiggle (slide) a flat palm to listen for coin scrapings. Searchers eliminate hands by touching them to force a flip. If the coin is revealed before the last remaining hand, the hiding team wins. If the coin stays hidden until the very last hand, searchers win.

### 5. Debrief observation tactics (2 minutes)

Gather the group to reflect on deduction tactics and nonverbal cues. Ask 2 or 3 participants to share specific observations that guided their choices.

## Debrief questions

- Which physical cues gave away the coin location, and which were successful distractions?
- How did your searching team resolve disagreements about which hand to flip next?
- What coordination did the hiding team use to make Down Nelson sound like a single slap?

**Finished output:** A completed deduction round resolving whether the searching team successfully isolates the coin under the final hand.

## Remote

Up Nelson requires a shared physical table to pass an object secretly, slam elbows, and slap palms to conceal sound. It cannot run as the same game online. A distinct remote deduction alternative is Two Truths and a Lie using webcam reactions.

## Hybrid

Not recommended for hybrid settings. Remote participants cannot track tactile cues, participate in secret passing, or slam palms. If attempted, remote participants may only serve as advisory consultants to the searching team via a webcam facing the hiding line.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants who prefer not to hit elbows or slap tables may gently rest forearms and palms on the surface without force.
- Anyone may choose to pass on holding the coin by signaling teammates before the round, or serve as the game referee and timekeeper instead of playing at the table.

## If the session gets stuck

**The coin clinks loudly when hit on the table during Down Nelson, giving away the location immediately.**

Remind the hiding team that synchronizing all palm slaps into a single loud strike masks the coin sound.

**Searchers stall indefinitely, hesitating to touch hands and eliminate suspects.**

Introduce a 30-second decision timer for each hand touch to keep momentum moving.

## Terms used here

- Captain: The designated searching player authorized to call 'UP NELSON' to bring the hidden hands above the tabletop.
- UP NELSON: The command called by the Captain that forces all hiding players to simultaneously raise clenched fists and rest elbows on the table.
- DOWN NELSON: The command called by any searching team member after all elbows are grounded, forcing hiding players to slap palms flat on the table together.
- Squiggle: Sliding a flat palm along the tabletop without lifting it, revealing whether a coin scrapes underneath.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in Playmeo, where it is attributed to Mark Collard.

Retained the core Playmeo mechanics: 15-second passing limit under the table, UP NELSON and DOWN NELSON commands, squiggling to test for coin scrape, and the rule that finding the coin earlier than the final hand gives the win to the hiding team. UWT adjusted the timing to a single 15-minute round and debrief to avoid pacing contradictions, separated the Down Nelson timing to preserve searcher tactical control, shortened step instructions to under 90 words, and added access options and debrief questions.
