# All Aboard

A team attempts to fit as many members as possible onto a small, defined boundary or low platform and stay balanced without touching the outside ground for five seconds. Participants plan, test weight distributions, and reflect on their physical coordination and communication.

**Time:** 15 minutes. Playmeo records suggest a 5 to 15 minute window; 15 minutes accommodates orientation, multiple attempts, and debrief.
**People:** 6 to 15. Single group working together on one platform, or split into squads of 6 to 8 if multiple platforms are available.

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Test collective coordination and physical problem-solving by fitting the maximum number of group members into a constrained footprint.
**Use it when:** Use during in-person team workshops or outdoor initiatives when participants have consented to light physical coordination challenges and want to practice iterative problem-solving.
**Skip it when:** Skip when participants have mobility limitations, footwear unsuitable for balancing, strict physical distancing requirements, or discomfort with close physical proximity.

## Materials and tools

- One low wooden platform (roughly 2 feet by 2 feet) or a heavy flat tarp/rope folded to an equivalent small footprint
- One digital stopwatch or smartphone timer

## Before participants arrive

1. Place the platform on a flat, non-slip, clear surface with at least 6 feet of clear perimeter space in all directions.
2. Check that the surface is level and free of trip hazards.

## Say this to open

Our task is called All Aboard. The goal is simple: support as many team members as possible on this platform so that no one touches the surrounding floor for a full five-second count. Safety and consent come first. Anyone can pause the attempt, step out, or take a spotting and timing role at any moment.

## How to run it

### 1. Brief and assign safety roles (3 minutes)

Explain the rules and confirm consent for physical proximity. Clarify that anyone who prefers not to stand on the platform acts as an active spotter or official timekeeper. Demonstrate safe spotting: hands ready at chest height, stable stance, ready to steady anyone who tilts.

### 2. Plan strategy and initial attempt (4 minutes)

Give the team 4 minutes to plan their arrangement and make their first test attempt. For an attempt to count, all participating feet or support points must remain entirely within the platform boundary, and no hands, knees, or feet may touch the surrounding ground for 5 continuous seconds.

### 3. Iterate and test final arrangement (5 minutes)

Allow repeated attempts. If the team easily fits everyone, fold the boundary smaller or set an optional target such as holding position with fewer points of contact. If a foot touches outside, reset the timer and let the team refine their approach.

### 4. Debrief team coordination (3 minutes)

Gather the group around the platform. Invite 2 or 3 participants to reflect on the balance between planning and real-time adjustment using the debrief questions.

## Debrief questions

- What specific communication helped people adjust their weight while boarding?
- How did the group decide on the sequence of who stepped on first versus last?
- Where did planning stop and real-time improvisation take over?

**Finished output:** A confirmed group record of how many members held balance on the designated platform for five consecutive seconds.

## Remote

This is an in-person physical challenge that requires shared physical balance and cannot be run genuinely online. For remote teams seeking a spatial constraint puzzle, run 'Digital Grid Squeeze' instead: use a shared online spreadsheet where 8 participants must navigate tokens into a 3x3 grid without landing on overlapping or restricted cells according to turn-based movement rules.

## Hybrid

Hybrid delivery is not recommended because remote participants cannot share the physical platform. If attempted, assign remote participants as tactical coaches and official timekeepers via a live video stream facing the platform edge.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants may opt out of physical boarding without disclosure by taking the official timekeeper, safety spotter, or tactical coach role.
- Any participant can call 'freeze' or 'step down' at any moment to cancel an attempt instantly if balance feels unsafe.

## If the session gets stuck

**Participants try unsafe stacking, like climbing onto someone's shoulders.**

Enforce a safety rule before starting: no shoulders-carrying or stacking. Feet must support body weight or rest on the platform.

**The group gets stuck after one failed attempt and talks without trying.**

Prompt a small physical test: ask them to place just three people on the base and observe where remaining foot space exists.

## Terms used here

- Spotting: Standing alertly near an active participant with hands raised to steady them if they lose balance.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in Playmeo activity database as 'All Aboard', a traditional adventure education and low ropes team balance initiative.

Retained the core mechanic from Playmeo evidence: supporting the group on a low wooden platform without touching the ground for 5 seconds within a 15-minute timeframe. UWT added explicit safety rules prohibiting piggybacking/shoulders, dedicated non-contact roles (timer and spotter) for accessibility, structured time breakdown, and specific debrief prompts.
