# Fire In The Hole

Pairs hold an inflated balloon between their chests and squeeze together in a bear hug until it pops. Non-bursting and observational roles let everyone choose their level of physical contact and noise.

**Time:** 10 minutes. UWT estimated 10 minutes total: 3 minutes setup and safety demo, 4 minutes popping attempts, 3 minutes debrief and cleanup.
**People:** 4 to 24. Pairs (plus an optional trio or neutral observer role for odd numbers)

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Coordinate physical pressure with a partner to pop a balloon simultaneously.
**Use it when:** High-energy icebreakers or warm-ups where participants have already consented to close physical contact and loud noise.
**Skip it when:** Groups where close physical embraces, sudden loud popping noises, latex exposure, or forceful exertion are unwelcome or inaccessible.

## Materials and tools

- 15 to 20 well-inflated latex balloons (standard 9 to 12 inch size, plus spares)
- 1 trash bin or collection bag for balloon scraps
- Optional: non-latex balloons if allergies are present
- Optional: foam earplugs for sound-sensitive participants

## Before participants arrive

1. Inflate 1 balloon for every 2 participants plus 4 spares before starting the clock.
2. Ensure an open physical space free of sharp furniture edges or trip hazards.
3. Check for latex allergies among participants beforehand.

## Say this to open

We are going to do a quick partner game called Fire In The Hole. The mechanic is straightforward: two people sandwich an inflated balloon between their upper torsos and hug tightly until the balloon pops. This involves close body contact and sudden loud bangs. If you prefer not to participate in the physical squeeze or dislike loud pops, you can act as the countdown caller, referee, or cleaner. If you want to play, pair up and take one balloon.

## How to run it

### 1. Set boundaries and demonstrate (3 minutes)

Explain the safety rules and opt-in nature clearly. Demonstrate the setup with a consenting volunteer: hold the balloon securely against your chest, wrap your arms around the partner's upper back, and emphasize keeping faces turned outward to avoid face contact. Demonstrate the call: both shout 'Fire In The Hole!' right before squeezing. Clarify that anyone can stop immediately at any time by stepping back.

### 2. Form pairs and prepare positions (2 minutes)

Invite participants to pair up. Assign any odd participant as the lead official caller, or form a trio where one person cheers and times. Distribute one inflated balloon to each pair. Have pairs align chest-to-chest with the balloon positioned centrally on the breastbone, turning heads sideways away from each other.

### 3. Execute the balloon crush (2 minutes)

Lead a synchronized room countdown: '3, 2, 1, Fire In The Hole!' Pairs squeeze simultaneously, pulling their chests inward to compress and pop the balloon. If a balloon slips out or fails to burst on the first try, pairs reset, adjust positioning, and try once more. Stop after two minutes or when all active balloons have burst.

### 4. Clean up and debrief (3 minutes)

Direct all participants to immediately pick up balloon fragments and drop them into the trash bin to leave no residue. Gather the room standing or seated. Ask two short debrief questions. Take two or three quick responses from volunteers.

## Debrief questions

- What physical technique made it easier or harder to burst the balloon?
- How did coordinating with your partner affect how much effort you exerted?

**Finished output:** All distributed balloons popped or safely collected, with all scraps gathered into the trash.

## Remote

Fire In The Hole cannot run online because the defining mechanic requires two people in physical contact squeezing a balloon between their torsos. A labeled remote alternative is 'Paper Cup Tower Sprint': pairs in breakout rooms compete to see which individual can stack a stable pyramid of six household cups and take it down fastest while communicating over video.

## Hybrid

Run the balloon popping solely among willing in-person pairs. Remote participants take on the role of timekeepers, room judges, and synchronized countdown callers over the room microphone and video feed.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants may opt out of chest-to-chest contact by choosing to press the balloon between their backs, using their hands instead, or acting as countdown caller and floor cleaner.
- Anyone may pass or release hold instantly without explanation if uncomfortable. Latex-free balloons or earplugs should be offered upon request.

## If the session gets stuck

**A balloon slips out repeatedly without bursting.**

Have the pair lower their center of gravity, bend their knees slightly, and ensure the balloon sits squarely on the flat part of the upper ribcage rather than the stomach.

**A participant finds the sudden popping noise alarming.**

Offer foam earplugs in advance or direct sound-sensitive individuals to observe or manage the timer from outside the immediate room perimeter.

## Terms used here

- Fire In The Hole: A traditional warning phrase shouted before a planned explosion; used here as the synchronized cue to squeeze.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in Playmeo collection, which attributes the activity to Mark Collard.

Retained the core Playmeo mechanic of chest-to-chest partner balloon bursting and the shout 'Fire In The Hole'. Added explicit consent, opt-out roles, head-turning safety protocols, earplug options, cleanup instructions, and a debrief segment to ensure safety and structure.
