# Jump Clap Spin Run

Participants stand in a circle and pass a repeating four-action sequence around the ring: jump, clap, spin, and run across. The person who crosses restarts the pattern from their new spot.

**Time:** 8 minutes. Playmeo suggests playing for a minute or two; UWT sets 8 minutes including setup, low-speed walkthrough, active rounds, and brief debrief.
**People:** 8 to 24. Single whole-room circle

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Coordinate physical attention and quick reaction timing in a whole-group circle.
**Use it when:** Use during mid-session slumps or between intense seated work sessions when a standing group needs quick physical reset.
**Skip it when:** Skip when participants have mobility limitations that make rapid physical turns or running hazardous, when floor space is tight, or when quiet focus is required.

## Materials and tools

- No special materials.

## Before participants arrive

1. Clear the center of the room so participants can cross safely without tripping over bags, chairs, or cables.
2. Have participants stand in a spacious circle facing inward.

## Say this to open

We are going to pass a four-part rhythm around our circle. The actions are jump, clap, spin, and run across. Each person does only their designated action when their turn arrives. Let us walk through the four steps slowly first.

## How to run it

### 1. Introduce the sequence (2 minutes)

Explain the four sequential roles moving clockwise: Person 1 jumps, Person 2 claps, Person 3 spins 360 degrees, and Person 4 crosses the circle to step between two people on the opposite side. Demonstrate each move slowly with three volunteers to your right.

### 2. Walk through a slow practice round (2 minutes)

Initiate a slow walkthrough round. Ensure Person 4 walks across the circle, slots into a new spot, and immediately initiates the next cycle with a jump. Continue until at least two full four-action cycles complete smoothly.

### 3. Play at full tempo (3 minutes)

Signal the start of continuous play. Participants prompt each other verbally or with gestures if someone pauses. Let the pattern circulate for 2 to 3 minutes. Stop the action before physical fatigue sets in.

### 4. Debrief observations (1 minutes)

Bring the group to a standstill. Ask 1 or 2 quick reflection questions to close the exercise before transitioning to the next agenda item.

## Debrief questions

- Where did the pattern flow naturally, and where did the rhythm pause?
- What helped you know your turn was coming before the person next to you moved?

**Finished output:** The group successfully executes multiple continuous cycles of the four-action sequence and returns to a resting circle.

## Remote

Jump Clap Spin Run relies on physical relocation across an open room and cannot work natively online. For a video call, use a seated vocal-rhythm alternative: set an ordered call list in chat. The sequence becomes: Person 1 taps desk, Person 2 claps, Person 3 snaps fingers, and Person 4 calls out the name of someone across the roster to restart the cycle.

## Hybrid

Do not attempt to combine remote and in-person participants in one physical circle. Run the physical game strictly with in-person participants while remote attendees observe, or run the seated screen-based vocal alternative simultaneously for all participants.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants may replace jump with a hand raise, spin with a shoulder roll, and run with a slow walk or pointing gesture across the room.
- Anyone who prefers not to participate physically can act as timekeeper or pattern caller from a seated position outside the circle without explanation.

## If the session gets stuck

**Participants collide in the center of the circle.**

Remind the group that only one person crosses at a time, and change the fourth action from running to brisk walking.

**The group gets stuck trying to remember which of the four actions comes next.**

Post four visual cues (Jump, Clap, Spin, Run) on a wall or call out the four action names as prompts until the rhythm stabilizes.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed on Playmeo, which attributes the activity to Nate Folan.

Retained the four core movements (jump, clap, spin, run across) and clockwise passing mechanic documented on Playmeo. UWT added explicit time structuring, safe walking variations, accessibility adaptations, and structured debrief questions.
