# Spaghetti Junction

Participants inspect a tangled cluster of closed cord loops without touching them. The group reaches consensus on which single loop threads through every other loop before testing their answer.

**Time:** 15 minutes. Source specifies 10 to 15 minutes for 3 to 8 participants; planned for 15 minutes.
**People:** 4 to 8. Single group of 4 to 8 around a central table or floor space

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Reach a unanimous group decision based solely on shared visual analysis and verbal coordination.
**Use it when:** Use when a small team needs practice pooling distinct physical viewpoints, testing assumptions, and reaching agreement before taking an irreversible action.
**Skip it when:** Skip when participants cannot gather around a central visual object, or when fine visual discrimination between overlapping colored strands presents an access barrier.

## Materials and tools

- 5 to 8 distinctively colored cord loops (each roughly 1 meter long, tied or spliced into closed rings, with one key loop intentionally threaded through all others)
- 1 central table or open floor area where the tangled loops can rest flat

## Before participants arrive

1. Take one chosen key cord loop and thread it through the center of every other closed loop individually, ensuring that if you lift only the key loop, all other loops hang securely suspended from it.
2. Test the setup privately: lift the key loop to confirm all other loops stay linked, then lower it back down.
3. Muddle and intertwine the pile on the central table so the key cord is mixed among the others and not obvious at a glance, keeping the loops flat enough to inspect.
4. Ensure each cord loop has a distinct color and clear visual texture.

## Say this to open

In front of us is a tangled cluster of colored rope loops. Exactly one loop is threaded through all the other loops within the pile. Your task as a team is to figure out which loop that is, and agree unanimously on your choice before we test it. You may walk around the table, crouch, point, and describe what you see from any angle, but no one may touch, lift, or shift the cords.

## How to run it

### 1. Inspect and speak aloud (2 minutes)

Facilitator delivers the opening script. Participants walk around the table to inspect the pile from multiple angles without touching any cord. Individuals trace strand paths visually and note initial observations aloud.

### 2. Deliberate and test theories (5 minutes)

Participants share which color they suspect and explain why. When differing viewpoints emerge, members point to specific crossings and guide others to trace paths from their angle. Everyone must remain hands-off.

### 3. Reach consensus nomination (2 minutes)

The group confirms whether everyone accepts a single nominated color. If anyone disagrees, deliberation continues until all participants agree on one single cord to nominate.

### 4. Reveal and test (1 minutes)

The facilitator picks up only the nominated rope loop by one segment and lifts it smoothly above the table, shaking out slack. If all other loops lift together, the team solved it. If any loop drops free, the facilitator lifts the true key loop to demonstrate the link.

### 5. Debrief decision dynamics (5 minutes)

Facilitator poses the debrief questions. For each question, invite two or three volunteers to share observations so the conversation stays focused and fits within the time.


## Debrief questions

- What specific information or physical angle convinced people who initially favored a different loop?
- How did the restriction against touching the cords change how you described what you saw?
- How did the group handle disagreement before committing to the final choice?

**Finished output:** A unanimous group nomination of a single cord loop tested against physical reality.

## Remote

This activity requires physical manipulation and continuous three-dimensional inspection. Online delivery distorts the mechanic into a flat screen view. An appropriate related alternative is a digital knot diagram where participants collaborate via annotated screen-sharing to trace overlapping lines, though physical suspension cannot be reproduced.

## Hybrid

Hybrid delivery is not recommended because remote participants cannot alter vantage points freely or match the spatial perspective of people in the room. If attempted, a rotating overhead and side camera controlled by a dedicated operator must provide custom angles requested verbally by remote participants.

## Access and participation choices

- Ensure table height allows participants who are seated or use mobility devices to inspect the cords clearly from multiple sides.
- Use high-contrast cord colors and patterns (such as solid, striped, braided) so participants with color-vision differences can distinguish strands.
- Participants may choose to offer verbal clues, confirm agreements, act as the final spokesperson, or observe deliberation silently.

## If the session gets stuck

**A participant reflexively touches or pulls a cord during deliberation.**

Remind everyone immediately of the hands-off rule. Gently smooth the pile back into position if a strand moved significantly.

**Two participants disagree firmly and talk over each other.**

Pause the group. Ask participant A to describe the specific intersection they see, then ask participant B to stand in participant A's exact spot and look at that intersection before responding.
