# Classroom Restaurant

Pairs take turns playing a customer ordering a meal and a server taking the order using a printed menu.

**Time:** 30 minutes. Based on the 30 to 45 minute range in the ESL Active record; structured here for 30 minutes.
**People:** 4 to 24. Pairs seated face to face. If there is an odd participant, form one trio with two customers and one server.

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Practice service interactions and structured dialogue using menu constraints.
**Use it when:** Use in language training or customer service practice where participants need low-stakes rehearsal of ordering, asking clarifying questions, and taking requests.
**Skip it when:** Skip when the focus is analytical problem solving or when participants already have full fluency and require complex unscripted negotiation.

## Materials and tools

- One printed menu card per pair (sample provided)
- One order notepad or blank paper slip per person
- One pen or pencil per person
- Tables and chairs arranged in cafe pairs

## Before participants arrive

1. Arrange chairs in pairs across small tables or facing each other.
2. Place one printed menu card, two blank order slips, and two pens at each station.

## Say this to open

Welcome to Classroom Restaurant. In this activity, you will practice ordering food and taking customer orders using a sample menu. One person starts as the server and the other as the customer, then you will switch. Focus on clear questions, polite requests, and accurately recording the order.

## How to run it

### 1. Introduce roles and review menu (5 minutes)

Explain the two roles. The customer chooses one drink, one main dish, and an optional starter or dessert, asking at least one question about ingredients or recommendations. The server welcomes the customer, answers questions using the menu, notes down the order accurately, and repeats it back. Walk through the sample dialogue provided on the menu sheet.

### 2. Round one simulation (10 minutes)

Assign Person A as the server and Person B as the customer. Person A stands or sits with the notepad while Person B reads the menu. Run the simulation for 8 minutes. When finished, have the server read back the final ticket. Use the remaining 2 minutes for the pair to check if the written ticket matched what was asked.

### 3. Round two swap (10 minutes)

Swap roles so Person B is the server and Person A is the customer. Customers must choose different items than round one and ask a new question, such as dietary modifications or side substitutions. The server records the ticket and repeats it back. Pairs check accuracy when the exchange ends.

### 4. Group debrief (5 minutes)

Call the room back together. Ask 2 or 3 volunteers to share practical snags in taking or placing orders, focusing on how clarifying questions prevented misunderstandings.


## Debrief questions

- What specific questions helped clarify an unclear order?
- As the server, what made it easy or difficult to record the order accurately?
- What phrase felt most natural when asking for an alternative or substitution?

**Finished output:** Each participant completes a written order ticket that matches their partner's spoken choices.

## Remote

Use breakout rooms with two participants each. Provide the menu as a PDF or shared screen document. One participant types the order into the text chat or a shared doc and reads it back to confirm. The facilitator broadcasts 10-minute timing alerts to manage the role swap.

## Hybrid

Pair in-person participants together and remote participants together in individual breakout rooms. Avoid cross-modality pairs to keep audio clear during simultaneous dialogues.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants may point to menu items or use written prompt strips instead of unassisted speaking.
- Anyone uncomfortable speaking can serve as the timekeeper and order-checker in a trio.

## If the session gets stuck

**Participants finish their order exchange in less than two minutes.**

Prompt the customer to request a modification, ask about an allergy, or change their mind about an item to extend the dialogue.

**An odd number of participants leaves one person without a partner.**

Form one group of three. Two participants act as dining companions placing separate orders, while the third acts as the server.

Server: 'Certainly. And what would you like to drink?'
