# Birthday Lineup

Participants arrange themselves in calendar order by birthday month and day without speaking. The group checks their sequence aloud and reflects on nonverbal communication.

**Time:** 18 minutes. UWT suggested duration of 18 minutes to allow calm physical sorting, verbal verification, and adjustments for up to 24 participants.
**People:** 6 to 24. Whole group in a single line or arc.

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Observe nonverbal negotiation, emergent sequencing, and coordination under an imposed silence constraint.
**Use it when:** Use as a fast physical reset or icebreaker to examine communication assumptions without verbal language.
**Skip it when:** Skip when room movement is inaccessible, or when the group prefers not to share dates and an alternate collective criterion has not been planned.

## Materials and tools

- 10 to 12 pre-written neutral date cards (index cards with arbitrary calendar dates like March 14 or October 22) placed on a side table.

## Before participants arrive

1. Clear a pathway along the room wide enough for all participants to stand side by side and change positions safely.
2. Write arbitrary calendar dates across 10 to 12 index cards and set them face down on a side table.

## Say this to open

Line up in calendar order by birthday, starting with January 1 at this end and finishing with December 31 at the other end. You must sort yourselves without speaking or mouthing words. Sort only by month and day, not year. For example, March 14 comes before October 22. If you prefer not to use your actual birthday, discreetly pick up a date card from the side table and sort using that date.

## How to run it

### 1. Set boundaries and silence rule (2 minutes)

Designate the January 1 end and the December 31 end of the room. Speak the opening script. Clarify that only month and day are used, not birth year. Point out the neutral date cards on the side table. Verify that everyone understands mouthing words, writing on paper, and whispering are not allowed.

### 2. Sort the line silently (5 minutes)

Give the start signal. Participants move along the line, using finger counting, gestures, or body language to compare dates and shift into sequence. End the round when the line stops moving and participants give a thumbs up to indicate readiness.

### 3. Verify dates aloud and adjust (8 minutes)

Start at the January 1 end. Each participant in turn speaks their month and day aloud (or the date on their neutral card). As dates are called, pause so any misplaced participants can swap into their correct slots until the entire line is accurate.

### 4. Debrief nonverbal coordination (3 minutes)

Facilitate a debrief with the whole room. Take three to four volunteer reflections using the debrief questions.

## Debrief questions

- How did you convey your month and day without spoken language?
- Where did communication break down, and how did you resolve it?
- What assumptions did you make about hand signals or finger counts?

**Finished output:** A fully verified chronological line of participants arranged from January to December.

## Remote

In an online meeting, open a shared whiteboard with numbered slots from 1 to the group size. Each participant claims an unnamed digital card. Without speaking or typing words in chat, participants draw visual tallies or symbols on their card to signal month and day, dragging cards into calendar order. When an individual feels settled in place, they turn their card border green. When all cards are green, each person unmutes in the final sorted order of cards on the whiteboard to read their date aloud and check the sequence.

## Hybrid

Split sorting into two parallel streams: in-person participants form a physical line while remote participants sort digital cards on a shared whiteboard. Both groups work under total silence. When remote participants finish, they turn their digital card border green; when in-person participants finish, they put thumbs up. Once both streams finish, the in-person participants state their dates aloud down their line, followed by remote participants unmuting to read down their whiteboard sequence.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants who prefer not to stand or walk may sit along the line while adjacent peers adjust around them.
- Anyone who prefers not to share their real birthday may take a pre-written neutral date card from the side table and sort using that date without announcement.

## If the session gets stuck

**Participants mouth words or whisper numbers.**

Remind the room that mouth movements count as speech. Prompt them to rely strictly on hand gestures.

**Two participants share the same date and get stuck deciding who goes first.**

Step in and remind them that identical dates stand together in either order so the rest of the line can settle.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in Teampedia as an open collaboration exercise titled Birthday Lineup.

Retained the nonverbal sorting mechanic, calendar range, and debrief prompts from Teampedia. UWT expanded total duration to 18 minutes to ensure realistic verification time for up to 24 participants, added explicit physical space setup, included 10 to 12 pre-written neutral date cards for privacy, and established nonverbal digital signaling for remote and hybrid settings.
