# Balloon Tower

Small teams construct the tallest freestanding tower they can using only balloons and tape within ten minutes. The facilitator measures the freestanding structures and leads a short review of planning, roles, and structural strategy.

**Time:** 15 minutes. 15 minutes total, matching the 10-minute build window and review from TrainerBubble source materials.
**People:** 4 to 24. Parallel small teams of 3 to 6 participants. If group counts do not divide evenly, form teams of 3 to 5 first and distribute extra participants so no team exceeds 6.

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Test small-group coordination, role division, and rapid prototyping under a strict countdown using flexible materials.
**Use it when:** Use during in-person team workshops or training sessions to break up passive listening and observe how groups organize roles, test ideas, and adapt under time pressure.
**Skip it when:** Skip when participants have latex allergies, sensory distress from popping noises, or when the workshop is fully virtual.

## Materials and tools

- 20 to 25 latex balloons per team
- 10 to 15 spare balloons for the room in case of early pops
- 1 roll of clear tape or masking tape per team
- 1 tape measure for the facilitator
- 1 manual balloon pump per team (optional for accessibility)

## Before participants arrive

1. Confirm participants do not have latex allergies or extreme sound sensitivities to popping.
2. Clear open floor stations at least six feet away from walls and tables so towers must stand independently.
3. Place one balloon bundle, one tape roll, and an optional manual pump at each station.

## Say this to open

Your team has ten minutes to build the tallest freestanding tower you can using only the balloons and tape at your station. Freestanding means no hands, walls, ceilings, or furniture may support it when time is called. You may tape balloons together, but you may not anchor them to walls or tables. You may tape the base to the floor. Your ten minutes begin right now.

## How to run it

### 1. Brief and launch (1 minutes)

Divide the room into teams of 3 to 6 people at designated floor stations. Deliver the opening script. Confirm every team understands the freestanding requirement before releasing them to build.

### 2. Build under countdown (10 minutes)

Run a 10-minute build timer. Teams inflate balloons and construct their towers. Give audible time notices at 5 minutes, 2 minutes, and 30 seconds remaining. At zero, call hands off. Every participant must step back at least two paces immediately.

### 3. Verify and measure (2 minutes)

Inspect each tower to verify that it stands without human contact or wall support for at least 10 seconds. Use the tape measure to measure vertically from the floor to the highest point. Announce the official height of each standing tower.

### 4. Debrief strategy and execution (2 minutes)

Gather the full room around the surviving structures. Pose the debrief questions and take one short reflection per team within the two minutes.

## Debrief questions

- What initial strategy did your team choose to balance height with a stable base?
- How did your building plan change once you started assembling the balloons?
- If you had to run this build again immediately, what single change would you make?

**Finished output:** A measured vertical height for each team's freestanding balloon structure and shared group observations on construction strategy.

## Remote

This activity requires physical manipulation of balloons and cannot be run online as written. A related remote alternative is a digital structure challenge where breakout teams use a collaborative whiteboard with a fixed palette of 20 geometric shapes to design the tallest feasible tower in 10 minutes, followed by group evaluation.

## Hybrid

Do not mix remote and in-person participants within the same build team. Form separate physical teams on site and a dedicated virtual team working on the digital whiteboard alternative, then bring both together to compare planning tactics during the debrief.

## Access and participation choices

- Provide handheld balloon pumps so nobody is required to inflate balloons by mouth.
- Participants may choose non-inflation roles such as tape cutter, structural designer, or team timer without explanation.
- Anyone sensitive to popping sounds may step outside during construction and return for measurement and debrief.

## If the session gets stuck

**A tower collapses the moment hands are removed at time.**

Remind groups at the two-minute warning that towers must stand on their own to count. If a tower falls after hands release, acknowledge the effort, record zero for the final standing score, and focus on the base design during debrief.

**Balloons pop frequently during inflation, startling participants and depleting stock.**

Advise teams to inflate balloons to medium capacity rather than maximum stretch, and offer replacements from the spare balloon supply.

## Terms used here

- Freestanding: Supporting its own weight without being held by hands, propped against walls, or suspended from fixtures.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in TrainerBubble training materials under the title 'Balloon Tower - Free Energiser'.

Retains the core TrainerBubble mechanic of building the highest freestanding balloon-and-tape tower in 10 minutes followed by a strategy review. UWT structured the run sheet into exact step increments, removed all prohibited punctuation, established clear team scaling rules from 4 to 24 people, added spare balloons to the materials list, and resolved timing contradictions between the brief and build countdown.
