# Dead Ant Tag

Participants play a high-energy tag game where tagged players lie on their backs with limbs wiggling. Four teammates must safely escort or carry each tagged player to designated safety zones to re-enter play.

**Time:** 10 minutes. Source specifies 1 to 2 minutes of active play per round; 10 minutes accommodates safety framing, two short rounds, and brief debrief.
**People:** 8 to 24. Whole group in an open boundary; 1 to 2 taggers, remainder as runners/rescuers.

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Re-energize a group through fast-paced physical movement and cooperative rescue coordination.
**Use it when:** Use during outdoor programs, physical education classes, or recreation sessions when participants have high physical energy and sufficient floor space.
**Skip it when:** Skip in professional meeting rooms, tight indoor spaces, with participants wearing formal attire, or when group members have physical mobility restrictions or discomfort with contact.

## Materials and tools

- 4 to 6 hula-hoops or marked floor spots (to designate Ant Hospitals)
- 4 boundary cones or floor tape to outline play area
- 1 whistle or sound maker for facilitator stop signals

## Before participants arrive

1. Mark a clear play perimeter with cones on a level, impact-safe surface (grass, gym mat, or turf).
2. Scatter 4 to 6 hula-hoops flat around the edges of the playing space to serve as Ant Hospitals.

## Say this to open

We are going to play Dead Ant Tag. Most of you are ants, and one person starts as It. If It tags you gently on the shoulder, you become a dead ant. Lie on your back, wave your arms and legs gently in the air, and call out 'Dead ant, dead ant!' To get back into the game, four fellow ants must come together to rescue you and bring you safely to a hospital hoop. Let's cover physical safety before we begin.

## How to run it

### 1. Explain safety and mechanics (3 minutes)

Explain boundaries, tagging etiquette (light shoulder touch only, no shoving), and rescue rules. Demonstrate the rescue: four rescuers gather around the tagged player. If carrying is comfortable and consented to, each holds one limb carefully. If carrying is not preferred, rescuers escort the player while holding wrists or having the player walk while surrounded. Announce that rescuers actively assisting are immune from tags.

### 2. Run round one (2 minutes)

Designate one volunteer as 'It' (or two if group exceeds 16). Signal the start. Tagger pursues ants. When tagged, players assume the ant position and call out. Four free ants coordinate to move them into an open hospital hoop. Once inside the hoop, the player stands and rejoins active play. Stop after two minutes.

### 3. Switch taggers and run round two (3 minutes)

Select new volunteers to be 'It'. Reset all players outside the hospitals. Run a second two-minute round with the same rules. Blow the whistle to end active play and have everyone gather at center court to catch their breath.

### 4. Debrief (2 minutes)

Pose debrief questions to the group while standing or sitting in a circle. Hear from 2 to 3 participants before closing.

## Debrief questions

- What made it easy or hard to recruit four people quickly for a rescue?
- How did taggers adapt their strategy once rescuers formed safe teams?

**Finished output:** Completion of cooperative physical rounds with all participants returned safely to a resting state.

## Remote

This high-intensity physical tag game cannot run online without changing its fundamental physical mechanic. For a remote energizer with quick cooperative coordination, run 'Virtual Freeze Rescue' instead: a designated tagger calls out participant names via gallery view. Tagged participants turn their cameras off. Two other participants must simultaneously type that person's name in chat to reactivate their camera.

## Hybrid

Dead Ant Tag requires shared physical space. In a hybrid setting, remote participants cannot play tag safely. Assign remote participants to run an independent virtual energizer or pair them as referee timekeepers who track tagger scores via an overhead webcam feed.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants may opt for the walking-escort rescue variation instead of being lifted or carried.
- Participants who prefer not to run or drop to the ground can serve as Hospital Wardens, signaling when a hospital is full or timing rescues from the perimeter.

## If the session gets stuck

**Rescuers attempt dangerous lifting or drop a teammate.**

Blow the whistle immediately. Pause play and mandate the ground-escort rule: rescuers touch wrists or link arms to form a human shield while the tagged player walks between them to the hospital.

**Taggers hover around fallen ants to trap incoming rescuers.**

Remind taggers that rescuers are safe while actively engaged in a rescue, and require taggers to stay at least two paces back from any hospital.

## Terms used here

- Ant Hospital: A hula-hoop or marked zone where tagged players are carried or escorted to become active runners again.
- Dead Ant: A tagged player resting on their back with limbs raised, calling for four rescuers.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in Playmeo library, attributed to Mark Collard.

Retained core play mechanics from Playmeo entry (hula-hoop hospitals, lying on back calling 'Dead ant', four rescuers carrying limb-by-limb, rescuer immunity). Added UWT safety guardrails: a no-lift walking escort variation for physical safety, explicit role choices for non-runners, and specific boundary setup instructions.
