# Hospital Tag

Participants play a free-for-all tag game where getting tagged forces them to hold the tagged spot with one hand, then both hands, before crouching on the third tag. The activity provides quick physical movement and resets group energy.

**Time:** 10 minutes. Playmeo suggests several minutes across two or more rounds; UWT structures this into a 10-minute energizer session including setup and brief debrief.
**People:** 6 to 24. Whole group in an open space, acting individually simultaneously.

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Engage all participants simultaneously in light physical movement and coordination.
**Use it when:** Use during in-person workshops or retreats when the room needs physical movement after prolonged seated work.
**Skip it when:** Skip if the space has trip hazards or obstacles, if participants wear formal or restrictive attire, or if members of the group decline physical contact games.

## Materials and tools

- Four boundary cones or floor tape markers to define the play area

## Before participants arrive

1. Clear a flat, obstacle-free playing area roughly 10 by 10 meters.
2. Mark perimeter boundaries using cones or tape.

## Say this to open

In this game, everyone is 'it' and everyone is trying to avoid getting tagged. Gentle two-finger tags only, on arms, shoulders, or back. If you get tagged once, place one hand on that spot as your bandage. If tagged a second time, place your other hand on the second spot. Once both hands are committed, you may only tag others using your hips. If tagged a third time, crouch down and wait for the round to end. If you prefer not to run, you can join as a boundary referee or spotter.

## How to run it

### 1. Introduce rules and assign roles (2 minutes)

Gather everyone at the boundary edge and walk the perimeter. Demonstrate a gentle tag. Explain the stages: first tag requires holding that spot with one hand; second tag requires placing your other hand on the second spot; with both hands placed, you may only tag others using your hips; third tag requires crouching down to wait. Offer non-running roles (boundary referee or spotter tracking active players). Check consent and invite anyone opting out of running to take referee spots around the perimeter.

### 2. Run round one (3 minutes)

Spread runners out within the boundaries. Referees stand along the perimeter to watch boundary lines and track crouching players. Call 'GO.' Players move, tag, and evade simultaneously. When someone is tagged three times, they crouch down in place. Stop the round after two minutes or when only two or three active players remain.

### 3. Run round two with walking modification (3 minutes)

Reset the group standing. Announce round two with speed restricted strictly to walking speed to increase safety and tactical evasion. Referees continue observing boundaries. Call 'GO' and run the round for two minutes.

### 4. Cool down and debrief (2 minutes)

Bring all participants, including referees, back to a loose circle. Take three deep breaths together to settle energy. Ask up to two participants to share how movement tactics changed once both hands were placed as bandages, then transition to the next agenda item.

## Debrief questions

- How did your movement strategy change once both of your hands were committed?
- What helped the group avoid collisions while moving in a shared space?

**Finished output:** All participants complete two rounds of physical movement and return to a shared circle ready for the next agenda item.

## Remote

Hospital Tag requires in-person physical space and contact. It cannot run online as a tag game. For a remote alternative with progressive handicaps, run a virtual round of 'Simon Says' or a seated reaction game via webcam, clearly labeled as a different method.

## Hybrid

This activity cannot include remote participants fairly due to its physical tag mechanic. Run an in-person energizer solely for the co-located group, or run an alternate camera-based visual reaction game so remote participants can take part.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants can opt out of running by serving as boundary referees or spotters who track who remains active.
- Anyone may withdraw at any time by stepping across the boundary line without needing to give a reason.
- Gentle tags must avoid the face, neck, and chest.

## If the session gets stuck

**Players run too fast and risk colliding in a confined room.**

Enforce a strict walking-only rule for all remaining rounds.

**Players tag with excessive force.**

Pause the round immediately. Remind the group that tags must be light two-finger touches.

## Terms used here

- Bandage: The hand held against the spot where a participant was tagged, restricting that hand from tagging others.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in Playmeo collection, which attributes the activity entry to Mark Collard.

The core rules (all-against-all, holding tagged spots as progressive handicaps, hip tagging at two tags, crouching at three tags) are preserved directly from Playmeo. UWT added a second walking-only round, perimeter referee roles for non-runners, and a brief two-minute cool-down debrief.
