# 52 Card Pick-Up

Small teams race to clear a shared deck of 52 prompt cards. Members draw individually, perform brief physical actions or gestures silently, and discard completed tasks.

**Time:** 15 minutes. UWT suggested 15-minute plan based on the 5 to 15 minute band in source records.
**People:** 4 to 24. Teams of 4 to 8 participants. For odd totals, distribute people evenly so every team has between 4 and 8 members (for example, 17 participants form two teams of 6 and one team of 5).

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Energize participants through quick, non-verbal actions and synchronized small-group coordination.
**Use it when:** Use as a mid-session physical reset or icebreaker when a group needs light movement and playful coordination.
**Skip it when:** Skip when participants require a low-stimulus setting, have restricted physical mobility, or need quiet analytical focus.

## Materials and tools

- One printed and cut set of 52 task cards per team (supplied in participant materials)
- One discard tray or marked box per team
- One countdown timer visible to the room

## Before participants arrive

1. Print and cut one 52-card deck for each team of 4 to 8 people.
2. Shuffle each deck and place it face down at each team station.
3. Place a discard tray on the opposite side of each table from the draw stack.
4. Clear space around each table so participants can move freely.

## Say this to open

In front of your team is a face-down pile of 52 task cards. When I say go, each person takes one card, reads it silently, and performs the action without speaking or showing the card. Once you finish the action, drop your card into your discard tray and draw another. If you draw a card you do not want to do, place it at the bottom of the draw pile and take another. Your team goal is to complete and discard all 52 cards before time runs out.

## How to run it

### 1. Explain rules and demonstrate (3 minutes)

Assemble teams of 4 to 8 at separate stations. Explain the rules: silent reading, no naming the action, performing the action fully, placing cards in the discard tray, and the free pass to return any card to the bottom of the stack without explanation. Demonstrate one neutral example: draw a card that says 'tap your foot ten times', tap your foot ten times without speaking, and place the card in the discard tray.

### 2. Run pick-up challenge (7 minutes)

Start the 7-minute timer and call 'Go'. Participants continuously draw cards, perform the actions individually, discard completed cards, and draw again. Announce when 3 minutes and 1 minute remain. If a team clears all 52 cards before the clock expires, note their finish time and let them cheer on remaining tables.

### 3. Count and reset cards (2 minutes)

Call time. Direct teams to count the total cards in their discard tray. Have each team restack their full deck face down on their table.

### 4. Facilitate debrief (3 minutes)

Call the room to order. Invite 2 to 3 volunteers to respond to the debrief questions on group coordination and silent execution.

## Debrief questions

- What strategies helped your team move through the cards without crowding?
- How did it feel to interpret and perform instructions without speaking or showing the card text?
- Which cards were easy to complete quickly, and which ones created pauses?

**Finished output:** A final count of completed task cards per team.

## Remote

Run in breakout rooms of 4 to 8 people. Provide a shared spreadsheet with 52 numbered rows (1 to 52) and a separate private document listing the 52 matching tasks. Participants claim a numbered row by typing their initials, check the matching task privately, perform the action on camera without speaking, and check off their row when done.

## Hybrid

Group remote participants together in dedicated virtual teams using the digital spreadsheet setup. Do not mix remote and in-person members within the same team to avoid unbalanced turn pacing and communication delays.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants may slide any card back to the bottom of the draw stack without giving a reason.
- Actions may be adapted to seated or small-range arm and hand gestures.
- Participants who prefer not to perform movements may act as the team card distributor and counter.

## If the session gets stuck

**Participants show or read cards aloud to teammates.**

Remind everyone that tasks must remain unspoken and unshown to preserve the silent guessing element.

**Crowding occurs around the draw pile.**

Direct teams to place the draw deck on one edge of the table and the discard tray on the opposite edge to establish one-way foot traffic.

## Terms used here

## Sources and adaptation

Observed on Playmeo, where the activity is attributed to Mark Collard.

Retained core rules from Playmeo: small teams, a 52-card face-down pile, individual draw, silent execution, discard upon completion, option to return cards without penalty, and racing to clear all 52 tasks. Added UWT standard operational structure: 15-minute pacing, step timings, full set of 52 task prompts, accessible participation options, separate digital board instructions for remote delivery, and reflection debrief questions.
