# Understanding Your Identity in Collaboration

Participants choose five items to pack into an imaginary personal capsule representing key parts of their identity. They share selections in small groups and reflect on which identity traits they present or hold back during collaboration.

**Time:** 50 minutes. Follows the 50-minute structure from the Collaborative Discussion Project source (10 min individual, 20 min small group, 20 min debrief).
**People:** 4 to 24. Individual reflection followed by small groups of 3 to 5 participants and a full-room debrief.

## Choose this exercise

**Purpose:** Help participants identify which aspects of their personal and social identity they choose to share or reserve when working in a group.
**Use it when:** Use when forming a new team, starting a collaborative project, or exploring communication dynamics in cohort discussions.
**Skip it when:** Skip when participants lack psychological safety or when the meeting requires immediate task execution rather than personal reflection.

## Materials and tools

- Blank paper or index cards (1 per person)
- Pens or pencils (1 per person)
- Timer or visible clock for the facilitator
- Chart paper and markers for recording group themes (optional)

## Before participants arrive

1. Arrange seating into small group clusters of 3 to 5 seats.
2. Distribute one sheet of blank paper and a pen to each participant seat.

## Say this to open

Today we will reflect on what parts of ourselves we bring into collaborative work, and what parts we hold back. Imagine you have an opportunity to live on another planet with an unfamiliar population. To prepare for your interview, you must pack five items into a capsule that represent who you are. On your paper, write down five items and the identity traits they stand for. Share only what you feel completely comfortable sharing with others.

## How to run it

### 1. Introduce scenario and write capsules (10 minutes)

Speak the opening script. Give participants 8 minutes of silent writing time to select their five items and note what aspect of identity each object represents. Remind everyone to write only items they are willing to discuss.

### 2. Share capsules in small groups (20 minutes)

Form groups of 3 to 5. Each person takes up to 4 minutes to share 1 to 3 items from their capsule. Instruct listeners to ask: What part of your identity does this represent? How does this trait show up, or stay hidden, when we collaborate together?

### 3. Full room inventory and pattern check (10 minutes)

Bring the room together. Invite 3 to 5 volunteers to name patterns they heard across capsules. Ask what kinds of items surfaced, where they noticed similarities, and where they observed tensions between different roles.

### 4. Debrief intentional sharing and boundaries (10 minutes)

Guide a whole-room conversation on when and why people hold traits back. Ask 2 or 3 participants to speak to what conditions make it feel safe to share more authentic traits, and what boundaries are healthy to maintain.

## Debrief questions

- What patterns or similarities stood out across the items people chose?
- Under what circumstances do you choose to bring specific parts of your identity forward in a group?
- What makes it reasonable or safe to hold certain parts of identity in reserve?

**Finished output:** Each participant completes a personal five-item capsule list, with optional small-group discussion notes on group collaboration norms.

## Remote

Run individual writing for 10 minutes. Send participants into breakout rooms of 3 to 4 people for 20 minutes with the discussion prompts pasted into the chat. Reconvene in the main room for a 20-minute verbal debrief or shared digital whiteboard inventory.

## Hybrid

Keep in-person attendees in physically spaced small groups and group remote attendees together in virtual breakout rooms. Conduct the final 20-minute debrief in the unified video conference, calling alternately on remote and in-person rooms.

## Access and participation choices

- Participants may describe symbolic items, real tools, photos, or abstract concepts.
- Participants may decline to share any specific item from their list or pass completely during group sharing without explanation.

## If the session gets stuck

**A participant feels pressured to disclose private or sensitive personal information.**

Remind the whole room that professional identities, hobbies, and simple daily habits count equally as valid capsule items. Reiterate that personal boundaries must be respected.

**One person talks too long in the small group, leaving no time for others.**

Provide clear time announcements every 4 minutes, prompting small groups to pass the speaking turn to the next member.

## Terms used here

- Identity Capsule: A container holding five tangible or symbolic objects that represent distinct aspects of a person's character, background, or values.

## Sources and adaptation

Observed in the Collaborative Discussion Project module '1.4 Understanding Your Identity in Collaboration'.

Retained the Collaborative Discussion Project core mechanic: imagining a five-item capsule for another planet to examine which identities we bring forward or reserve in discussion. UWT added structured group sizes, exact turn timers, standard access and boundary protections, and hybrid running rules.
